Saturday Night in Neyland Stadium Was About So Much More Than One Missed Call

A viewpoint regarding the end of game boil-over that could be attributed to a culmination of game-changing calls and situations that always seems to go against Tennessee.

"What happened Saturday night at Neyland Stadium was the culmination of a 12-year descent into oblivion, started by the man who was back in the building for the first time as a head coach again, this time on the opposing sideline. Since the day Lane Kiffin packed his bags for Los Angeles, Tennessee has spiraled a little more into madness each day and many journalists who cover college football have been happily along for the ride every step of the way" - Barstool

"From the Derek Dooley era to every Butch Jones gaffe to Schiano Sunday — which is where a lot of this comes from — to Jeremy Pruitt. Every time you thought things couldn't get worse, they did. And Vols fans understandably grew shorter and shorter on patience as the media grew more giddy with each rung further the Vols fell down the ladder of national prominence." - Barstool

I can't disagree with you on your assessment as both a Vols fan and a witness to what you say. I just can't help thinking of this as being like a charge call.

Tennessee fans are tired of being screwed over. Whether it’s by SEC officials or our own administration. Both of whom, like he alludes to in the article, are as well off as they are because of the passion and dedication of fans like us. As that one Miss St writer said: quit pissing off your customers.

For me it's been a little bit longer than just 12 years. I started seeing issues after the 2002 loss to the backup QB of LSU. I though then Fulmer was resting on his 98 NC and not putting the work in to compete with our top rivals of that day, after that we just started getting run over by other programs. The exit of LK under the cover of night and them calling the kids trying to take them to his dream job was just as hurtful and maddening. The rest of the crappy hires have become just as painful and, I'm numb to it all now. I think (for me) it's more than just LK, he was just the focus of many years of disrepair of our once GREAT and AWESOME program.

add a 5+ hour long night game after everyone’s been tailgating all day and some bad calls and endless fake injuries and you get projectiles eventually

Buddy Martin (Florida beat writer/radio personality) was just on Finebaum and said that there needs to be a further examination of the game and compared it to January 6th. People have lost their mind over this.

Everyone sees"the Writing on the wall"as they say,the LAST thing anybody wants is this sleeping giant to wake up.The fanbase is chomping at the bit,and looks like Heupel has the team playing hard.Folks are going to say and use anything they can to paint us in a bad light.

I had a friend at Alabama (just one) that was in close contact with people in power there told me several people in the conference understand that when Tennessee is right they can dominate. There are people who actively express disinformation and plant certain activities that is directed at keeping Tennessee unstable. I’m not sure how ,but he was very certain there have been efforts in the past that did just that. We all know there are plenty of posters that create false narrative to rile the fanbase and motivate them to act or make calls to boosters. Maybe this new administration is clean with no attachment to the past and no allegiance to former staff. If it is, we can move mountains.

I agree with what you're saying, but I think you mean the 2001 SEC Championship we lost to Saban when he coached at LSU. I attended that game, fully confident we were going to take care of business and then go to the Rose Bowl and win the BCS again. When Casey Clausen came out on the field carrying an orange rose, I thought maybe we shouldn't be too confident.

Everything was going according to plan until LSU's starting QB Rohan Davey was injured and QB Matt MF Mauck came in and beat us with his legs. Fulmer and Chavis had no clue how to adjust, and imo that has been a dominant theme with our team ever since. My sense is Fulmer and lesser coaches believe coaching is what you do from Monday through Friday, and on Saturday you just lined the boys up and let em play. Meanwhile, Saban was being Saban, exploiting our weakness, and running/passing the ball down our throats with his second string QB. It was the beginning of the end.

“...paint us in a bad light”. It is not like the past football program (and some fans) have not been working hard providing material to do just that. All of our problems with the program we have had over the last 15 years or so are self-inflicted. It is like we shoot ourselves in the foot, reload and blast away again. It does seem that there may be a light at the end of the tunnel finally. I just hope it works out that way. But right now, I am in a “wait and see” mode.

Yes sir you are correct. My memory isn't what it used to be. Good catch.

He’s a gator jocksniffer. He predicted Fla would win the East this yr back in the summer. Hell, they were out of it before Tennessee

For all Sabans brilliance, two critical fumbles in the second half destroyed the Vols chances. As good as the 1998 team was, the 2001 team was more talented.

Florida doesn't need to say CRAP! Urine from the stands in the early nineties, throwing stuff at our players in the 90's a few different games. I have seen bottles hit the field at Baton Rouge and Gainesville. Good grief some reporters are idiots, you would think nobody has throw stuff on the playing field or court before. You only have to go to our basketball game with Mississippi in 2019, they called a charge on Mississippi and the floor got covered. A bunch of hypocrites. GBO!!!!

There needs to be an examination all right. Incompetent officiating crew with a history of screw ups, the incessant flopping by the Ole Miss defense and the SEC office sticking their head in the sand on both just to name a couple.

Back when Fulmer was coach, he was in the hot seat for at least his last 2 years. What Tn Athletic dept failed to do was search out good coach to slide in his job when he was let go. They repeated this process with Dooley, Jones, Pruitt. They have the firing down, they have the payout down, they just fail to realize the importance of having a good coach ready when you let someone go. They fire the coach, then go in a panic to find a replacement( see Dooley/Jones/Pruitt )

Good article.

It was more than just one bad call. It was multiple bad calls. Despite the narrative, this might actually improve recruiting. I'm not on Twitter, but I've seen a couple of existing players say they appreciated that the fans "had their back."

I don't mind being looked at as the "bad guys." We should use it. \m/
