Interesting thought on in-state recruiting by Hubbs

One if the biggest things that affected the instate recruiting was replacing the entire recruiting department. They are the ones that help forge and foster those relationships with coaches.
Good observation. Thinking this could be an area where our AD could be more involved by hiring an overseer of sorts that his dept. controls. Not just for football but all sports so we could maintain a consistent relationship with all the HS's across the state. The members would not neccessarily have to change just because we have a coaching change.

Good grief, it’s all about personal relationships with the HS coaches across the state and then their kids. And, with the exception of Garner, this entire staff can relate to a lot of the other new-to-Tennesse transplant families, especially here in MidTenn.

I don’t buy the crazy suggestion that this staff first contacted our elite in-state recruits Wednesday night…if that’s what the claim is. Not a chance.
The claim was referencing next years, (2023), class.

my neighbor is a VFL, he said that he has heard through back channels that Pruitt did not care about instate talent and basically burned all of the bridges with the HS coaches in TN. Heupel is having to rebuild those relationships. Go figure.
Pruitt was a mole from Bammer that was sent by Satan ( Saban) to destroy our program.

It is crazy that tennessee only landed two of the top 25 players in the state. Out of the top 25 players, two went to Stanford, two went to Kentucky, two went to UGA, and Arkansas scooped up the most with three.

This isn't a knock on the staff. The esd went much better than I expected. I'm confident the vols will lock the down the state again in the near future.

That has been said about every coach UT has hired since Fulmer. TN has not been known to produce great talent. Outside of maybe the top 10 in the state the talent level drops off drastically. CJH hasn't been here long enough to establish a great relationship with the coaches and kids for this cycle. I wouldn't look to much into it but if in 3-4 yrs we aren't getting the top recruits then we may get worried.

Tennessee
It borders 8 other states most in the nation. It has had and been known for sub-par HS programs but has trended up last decade. You have fan bases that pull for (Georgia/Kentucky/Alabama/Auburn/NC/V Tech/ArkansasMissouri& Mississippi) these bordering states that kids see growing up. Even Fulmer Winchester TN. was very close to going to neighboring Alabama. Tennessee spends more or close to yearly on recruiting nationwide because there are a lot of variables associated with getting and relying on home-state players.

A bunch of these TN kids that went elsewhere will be wishing they were at UT once Heup gets this train rolling full speed

We were basically just a few miscues away from 9-3 this year (we beat ourselves versus Pitt and Ole Miss), so I can certainly imagine and will be wishing for this future.

CJH is going to earn the respect back in this state that Fulmer, Pruitt, Jones, and Dooley lost.
This is true. UT's culture must seep down into the high schools, I'm guessing. Earn the trust of the coaches and that's a good start to a healthy farm system.

Part of that was getting a late start. Given that we didn't even have a staff till February, and we had the investigation overhanging it all, they did an amazing job. 2023 and 2024 are going to be better litmus tests for their recruiting ability IMO, but to get a top 15 class with all the difficulties they face is very good.
Agree and with covid still locking out visits until June staff could not get the face time personally needed to build Trust. In CHRIST Alone

He won’t have to build bridges, it was built when Pruitt was fired. Heupel just has to reach out to schools with a a business as usual for the flagship University. He now has the sample both on and off the field now, although small it’s enough to get past Pruitts inability.

People say this but he killed it in state in his second class and probably would have signed several of the 2021 in state 4* if he’d had another year. I am glad he’s gone but he definitely did not alienate in state coaches and players. If anything, they looked forward to seeing his staff and maybe a McDs bag.

2022 was the deepest pool of in state 4* in many years. Everyone was pouring time and money into recruiting TN this year. Just look at the variety of programs where these kids are winding up. The 2023 TN HS crop has about half as many blue chip prospects as 2023. A lot of schools ain’t gonna waste time here next cycle, especially if the Vols can lock up a couple of in state 4* early on.
Just coming up with my own conclusion, but I've noticed Russillo and Dilfer talk UT some on their podcast. Making friends with Dilfer would be great for Heup and UT.

For all his shortcomings, Butch recruited the hell out of this state. If he knew what to do with the players once they arrived he could’ve been more successful.

I can tell you one thing that you can believe. Our last 3 were absolute goons!
May be why we hear it with each coaching change?
Butch had an all time legacy class fall in his lap and then couldn’t get out of his own way.
Pruitt was star struck and had no idea how to manage said stars.
I don’t know what the hell Dooley was doing and don’t think he did either.
GBO!!
To be fair, Dooley did recruit one of the best offenses UT ever had, but also had assembled THE worst defense they ever had.

Tennessee for years believed that we needed to raid other states for talent because the state was considered 2nd or 3rd tier. That neglect allowed Auburn and Alabama for 20 years to have access to the mid-state area and take players with ease. As years evolved and players developed, LSU when Chavis got there took a few, Georgia started coming north, Kentucky, Ohio State, Michigan and Norte Dame. This generation of player in Tennessee has grown up with losing football while the state saw the talent increase. We won't ever produce the quantity of states like Texas, CA, Louisiana or Florida but has to be able to identify the classes with quality and quantity early. The 2014 class is how it should be every year the state is cycled up like this class is. We for the most part locked the state up.
