I can only wear orange !! I grew up watching Tennessee football with my Dad and his friends back in the 70s . I was born a Vol in 1965and there is no way out !! I sure as heck will not change my colors lol but sometimes it gets very hard . So I'm as disappointed as anyone here I can promise ya that. Ive about had a meltdown more than once this year and the years past . :loco: But I'm a Tennessee Vol cant be changed . All season ive fired everyone on the staff and then hire them back , ive benched some of the players and then the next min I'm saying o heck yea you tha man !!!! I have to admit I'm getting tired of saying we will get them next year but I will still wear my orange . I'm new on here but not a new fan , good to meet you guys !! Ill be around and talk to yall more

u arent alone, we all in this together even though we are about as dysfunctional as most Family holidays that last 2-3 days to long cooped up in the same house with 1 bathroom, it took me about 5 years of reading on here before i finally signed up to post etc.....glad to have ya around

Pulling the old "There are more important things than football" line is a low blow Volfan102455.

Everyone on here knows that and feels that way, and to suggest otherwise is rude, crude, and socially unacceptable.

I enjoy seeing all the takes to devalue Butch or to justify him as a the Head Coach.

- Injuries
- Players fumbled and missed tackles, not Butch
- Coach Speak, Champions of Life, F them all
- Win total
- good recruiting
- Offensive problems
- Defensive problems
- position coaches
- Historical aspects of the program
- comparison to other coaches
- former player views

and on and on and on...

to me it all comes down to one simple fact: We are a poorly coached football team. Butch's main responsibility it to field a competitive, disciplined fundamentally sound football team. He has not done that.

Agreed. That is part of it. Injuries are there as well. If I felt hiring a coach now would fix things, I'd support a change. But, balancing all arguments, it appears that sticking with Butch is our best move. Now, let's hope we get better assistants and Butch let's them coach.

I get that argument of stability. The issue I have is that we are not a stable program.

- The coach has made a laughing stock of the team and players.
- The team is clearly poorly coached.
- Recruits are jumping ship, we can argue as to why, but perception is reality.
- Our coach constantly says things that EVERYONE knows is not true.
- Players and recruits are in limbo as to who will be coach next year.

Sticking with Butch will net you one thing for sure, a poorly coached football team. That team may or may not have the talent to be good next season. As for me, Id rather see a team that plays good fundamental football. It they drop a game they should that way, then fine. But we have talent on this team, a good coach will use it to the best of ability.
If you look at the two teams dominating football (Alabama and the Dallas Cowboys) the don't do anything special. They simply execute fundamental plays. We should hire a coach that has proven the ability to teach our team to do so.

Does anyone remember a thread from when Butch was first hired, quoting Cincinnati fans? I haven't been able to dig it up, and at this point I'm not even certain it's real.

What I remember is that someone pulled a few quotes from the Cincinnati board. The one that stuck with me was that Jones would immediately impress with his organization and recruiting, but eventually the cliches and platitudes would wear thin. It was surprising because recruiting was our main concern with the hire - how could a guy from the MAC and Big East compete with the big boys in the SEC?

That thread seems shockingly prescient at this point.

If people think Butch Jones is a good coach, all I have to say to that is just look at what James Franklin inherited in Penn State (a complete dumpster fire w/ only probably 60 scholly players) and in his 3rd year, he is competing for a BIG 10 Championship in the hardest division in the BIG 10 (comparable to the SEC West)............. Butch did not inherit a situation as bad as Franklin did (Im pretty sure) but Butch made it out to be a lot worse than what it was..........keep in mind Butch inherited 4 NFL Offensive Linemen and still could not do nothing..........

I think you missed the boat or did not show on purpose. Franklin has done a nice job at PS, but saying he faced a more difficult task than Jones did at Tennessee reflects a bias attitude or a total lack of information. Every team in the SEC had better talent returning than what Butch inherited. He had less than 6 weeks to put together his first recruiting class. He was put together some competitive classes since his first year. There were adequate talent to compete in the SEC, but talented depth was and still is lacking. Injuries exposed this lack of depth and we suffered, especially on defense. Also, remember, Franklin does coach in the big ten which will again be exposed in this year’s bowl games.

I fear the recruiting will take a hit--the sunshine pumpers will be happy with a top 25 class and say Lyle hit it out of the park.

I fear that our new QB will not be an Eason or Bentley...I also fear for his life as he will not have any blocking.

I fear our defense will continue to be a minor annoyance only to opposing offenses.

I fear we are stuck with Lyle for at least 1 more season.

I fear you'll continue to post the same stuff over and over

Penn St was playing w/ only 60 Scholarship players and do you think they had depth and keep in mind Penn St. is playing in the Eastern Division w/ Mich St. OSU, Mich which is far more competitive than the SEC East..... c'mon man....PS still doesn't have depth and Franklin is not using that as an EXCUSE

Defense was the issue this year. According to most of you Shoop was to fix that. He didn't - it got worse. Meanwhile at PSU, defense was just fine. Shoop has to find a way to redeem his reputation next year. If you don't believe it took a hit, you are insane.

Talent on a team gives opportunity to do good things - it doesn't guarantee it. If that were the case then there is no reason for teams to take the field and play each other. Just give all titles to Alabama at the start of the season and be done with it. No need to waste anyone's time watching any game.

Three of the four teams that Manning was on at Tennessee had way more talent than the 1998 team - yet those teams were never able to fulfill the goal of a NC. One of their losses was to Memphis and that was when Memphis was worse than Vandy. The 1998 team with less talent came out of nowhere and won the NC and there were many teams with more talent that year.

If PSU were not winning - trust me Franklin would be using it as an excuse.
