Interesting stat about the D last year

When you're giving receivers 10 yard cushions on 3rd and 8, something's wrong with that logic. Opponents rarely had to throw deep against us because they knew they would get a first down on intermediate routes. That was definitely a reason why the longest play against us was 37 yards.

In case you didn't notice, we were 10th in the SEC in opponents' 3rd down conversion percentage.

Also, 6 of our opponents last year were in the bottom 20 in the nation in total offense. When we played teams that had even a decent offense, we got methodically carved up. Matthew Stafford put up career-high numbers against us last year. Also, did you forget when we made Kevin Craft look like a Heisman contender in the 2nd half of the UCLA game?

For one, I would venture to guess that our defense was on the field for an average of about 8 to 10 more minutes than Alabama or Florida's defense. Also, when you look at our front seven last year, the fact that we can even be mentioned within the same breathe as Alabama and Florida is at least reason enough to give Chavis and our defensive staff credit. But I'm sure you will come back by saying something about how berry did it all himself or something.

If you have ellix wilson as your middle linebacker (talent wise) and still produce a top 5 defense in the nation, then the coaches have to be given credit

I hate to even voice this nagging feeling I have.

Our offense is going to be improved just because the kids seem to believe in it and are excited about it.

Defense is learning what your role is in any adjustments to what the offense does. Last year's kids had only played in Chief's system and were comfortable. They knew their role.

Please don't get me wrong. I love Monte. Really, I do. I just think our defense may not be as dominant.

Thanks. I'll hang up and listen.

I also believe there will be some growing pains on defense. That and the fact its still a thin defense past the first unit. They got about all they could out of that defense last year. Their stats were probably a little better than they actually were. We did play some very subpar offenses last year. 3rd down is what killed me about them. Hell third down is what killed me about chavis, other than that he was a pretty solid coach. The third down thing was hard to figure. I understand not wanting to get beat deep. You do have to challenge those receivers some though and johnny's defenses did a poor job of that most the time.

our d was sick last year. the only reason anyone could think otherwise is because the d was on the field all the time, and that is if they dont take a minute to think about.

To expand on this further-
Tennessee was 3rd in the SEC in scoring defense:
1 Florida 12.9 ppg
2 Alabama 14.3 ppg
3 Tennessee 16.8 ppg

But 1st in total defense:
Name G Rush Pass Plays Total Yards/Play Yards/G
1 Tennessee 12 1237 1925 776 3162 4.1 263.5
1 Alabama 14 1038 2651 858 3689 4.3 263.5
3 Florida 14 1476 2518 896 3994 4.5 285.3

You often hear that scoring defense is the most important stat, but if your team turns over the ball on your own 20 and you hold the other team to a FG, that's really the best that you can hope for. (You can't COUNT on your defense getting a turnover here)

Tennessee allowed 20 TDs on the year, while Florida allowed 21, and Bama allowed 25. Tennessee allowed 21 FGs, Florida allowed 12 and Bama allowed 9. This coupled with the low yardage average by Tennessee tells you that they often had to defend a short field and were pretty successful at it.

some of those TD's and FG's against the defense were lead by our offense turned the ball over on our side of the field
