Jimmy Hyams ran through what he knew about the different candidates that Tennessee was interested in during the process.

Butch Davis: Likes UNC and turned down Arkansas (his alma mater) last year to stay. He will likely be making near $3 million after this year. Davis believed it was easier to win the ACC from Carolina than it was to win the SEC from Tennessee.

Gary Patterson: He interviewed but it's unclear what transpired.

Mike Leach: Tennessee spoke with Leach but word was that Mike wanted to wait until after the Baylor game before having a formal interview. Tennessee wanted to get moving and didn't want to wait. The two parted ways.

Brian Kelly: Oddly, Kelly was trying to push the process and move along quickly - too quickly for Tennessee. Also, once the Notre Dame speculation started, Kelly was more interested in Notre Dame than Tennessee.

Will Muschamp: Got his raise at Texas.

Tim Brewster and Mark Dantonio: Tennessee wasn't interested in either of these two.

Mike Gundy: Some feelers were sent out by the search firm and word was that Gundy was not interested.

Gruden and Cowher: Both said no.

Good Information. Since a lot of people are crying because it wasn't their choice, now maybe they'll understand why it wasn't someone else.

Also, if MH knew about Monte Kiffin coming too than Lane Kiffin becomes a better hire than the others.

theoritically Kiffin could have been Hamilton's 12th choice

Or he could have been his 3rd or 4th choice. Just because he contacted a lot of people doesn't mean we settle for one of his bottom candidates.

I'm sure he didn't plan to just stop discussions with all coaches if one of the coaches showed major interest.

Some of my sources from the Mid-West, though that the semi racial comments that Kelley made when at Central Michigan, was too much baggage for a school in the national spotlight to overlook.

speaking of which, it seems we didn't show any interest to candidates of a non-caucasion ethnicity.

I'm happy with what we've got, but it only gives those critics more ammunition, and I would've liked to get rid of that stereotype.

Can you think of many great non white coaches available?

Maybe Turner Gill, but that's about it.

didn't see his name mentioned in this article. It wasn't mentioned in the one I read yesterday either. With all the speculation being thrown around over the last month, I don't remember seeing an article that did say we had shown interest in Smith.

Doesn't mean that we should've hired one, but it would be nice to know that we did at least show some sort of effort.

it strikes me as odd that kelly would want to fast-track the process, and then bailed based on speculation about ND.

even if the coach has ties to neither Institution, and was offered ND or Tennessee
most coaches are taking ND

Not if you're looking at the state of the programs. ND has been pretty bad for 2 decades now. They may never get out of their slump. Recruiting at ND seems to be harder than at UT now.

Money wise - yeah ND will win that war.

Look at ND's last few coaches. Nothing strikes me as impressive. Looks like it isn't such a great job.
