Interesting read on Neyland decibel levels from the Volopedia

I’ve always wondered why most of the fans in the stands wait until 3rd down to get loud instead of for the whole possession. I figure we know what play we are running, the fans should be loud the whole game, even when we have the ball. Then when we are on the road we can take the crowd out of it.

I like the idea of can’t hear anything but the roar of the crowd. What is the least db to achieve that effect?

Then just maintain that for the whole game. Even thru tv timeouts. What would happen if the opposing defense couldn’t communicate? They wouldn’t know when to flop. The refs wouldn’t know when to cheat.

I appreciate JH asking for a hostile crowd. I admire how Vol Nation delivered.

Somebody do a remake of the Jump Higher Hype Video. That one was my favorite. I can’t promise I won’t go overboard again.

The loudest sports event I’ve ever attended was a Chiefs game about 6 years ago. It was the home opener against the Chargers, and on the first drive when the Chargers faced 3rd and 2 I thought a bomb had exploded. The noise was unlike anything I have ever experienced

I used to park cars at Arrowhead and there was zero doubt when Derrick Thomas got a sack or we scored in the First quarter. Arrowhaed isn't often talked about but truly a great place to watch the game!

Well, of course it has an effect on the game. Florida looked like a mess when they played at Kentucky this year. --Too many false-starts to count.....
The loudest game that I ever attended at Neyland was 1998 vs Florida. My brother and I couldn't hear standing right next to each other. I think that Big Al Wilson might have had something to do with that game, too!

Cal 2006 was next level. Oklahoma was up there too
I would reverse that in my own opinion, but agree that both of those games were deafening. I think we got quieter in the OU game as it progressed towards its end because we saw the probable outcome of an L and everyone began to feel a little deflated.

Neyland is louder when at 3/4 strength. when at full strength there is not another sporting venue on earth that is louder.

I gave my all at the Ole Miss game, had to beg some to get up and get loud, if you not gonna get loud, stay home!!! I couldn't talk for 4 days.
it will get worse as the seats get bigger and more comfortable. people will be more comfortable and relaxed and they will lose that uncomfortable edge and aggression

I was at the 2013 UGA game at Neyland. Vols blocked a punt and returned it for a TD. I've never heard anything like it.

Why would we be loud when we have the ball? That creates a disadvantage for our offense.

98 Florida was louder to me than 06 Cal.... but it was Close - that Cal game was unreal. Auburn can get loud too..... LSU might take the cake though - those guys definitely yell more overall - but at its peak I think Neyland ‘98 is the loudest thing I’ve ever heard..... AC/DC and Van Halen come close

I’ve always wanted to attend a game there. Seems to be the consensus that it is the best atmosphere in the NFL.

Maybe it’s more important to create a disadvantage for the other team’s defense. Like I said, they won’t know when to flop and the refs won’t know when to cheat(That could backfire. Creating multiple penalties when they all think they have to do something and the next thing you know they are all throwing flags and then it would be too loud for the refs to decide which bogus call to enforce.)

Don’t get too worried about our fans being loud the whole game, it’s tough enough just to get them loud on 2nd down when we are on defense.

The Ole Miss game this year was deafening. Unfortunately that’s our only home game this year where the fans really created a special atmosphere
