Rucker: SpaceDobbs calls his shot for Tennessee Vols football

We didn’t know how good Josh Dobbs was.

I definitely didn't know how good Josh Dobbs was. In fact, after watching him bounce pass after pass into the turf in preseason camp, there were more than one handful of days I walked off Haslam Field wondering if Josh Dobbs was any good.

Interesting to note that Dobbs may have been the 4th string QB in the Spring depth chart.

Despite what almost 100% of coaches at every level believe, some guys are gamers. They play at a different level on Friday nights or Saturday afternoons.

I think the real Josh Dobbs stepped forward against USC. He's making great decisions with the ball.

During the spring, Ferguson was reportedly challenging Worley while Dobbs and Peterman trailed but were pretty equal. Much was made of Dobbs' inaccuracy in drills during August. I'm not sure who however saw scrimmage work.

There was definitely "something" that made the coaches go quickly from Peterman to Dobbs and never look back vs Bama.

I don't believe that for one second. Lot's of qb's are uninterested in practice, Dobbs had real time experience on the field and had performed very will considering the situations he was thrust into. Ferguson, and Peterman were practice warriors who had no real game time experience. What little Peterman had was dreadful at best, Feguson was a myth surrounded by a riddle wrapped in an enigma. The coaching staff wanted to redshirt Dobbs for one reason and that is they new he had great potential otherwise they would have no issues with wasting his eligibility like Peterman.

Butch Jones adhears to the "practice like how you would play in a game" which is why Dobbs wasn't the starter from the getgo. It is true that Dobbs is a Gamer and wasn't able to show that until the Alabama game. The poise and leadership he shows in game is outstanding.

He got better in practice which made him a gamer.

Practice is where players work on things. I personally doubt the "problem" was ever as severe as it looked to reporters and other on-lookers. If it were then there's no way they put him in vs Bama and let him throw it 32 times.

There was one particular day when folks here just went nuts over how "inaccurate" Worley had been... constantly throwing behind WR's in drills. Later in the coaches' interviews... one of them mentioned that they had been working back shoulder throws. All of those "strikes" that some QB's were throwing were off target or else they had not advanced enough to work on back shoulder.

When we or even the beat reporters "see" things... we sometimes don't really know what we're looking at.

Well they had last season to look at so I don't think he was high on their radar as a potential future star.

I watched a few practice videos from fall camp and he looked like crap to me. Hopefully we've found a new Dak Prescott that can lead this team to the promised land over the next couple of years.

Honestly... we don't know that. We do not know that the coaches didn't see what they wanted to from Dobbs. Most of what we get from practice is speculation. For instance reporters can watch passing drills without defenders and draw conclusions. It seems pretty obvious that Dobbs throws it more accurately when he has defenders. Some guys do... some don't. Sort of like a pitcher with and without a hitter. Some guys have to have the hitter there. Way back when, there were times I couldn't locate at all in warm ups. When I had a hitter to reference, I hit my spots.

Sometimes part of the equation for a QB is to throw away from trouble... away from the cover guy's play.

They would also have zero ability to evaluate Dobbs' running ability or command of the O in any real sense compared to the others.

There were even a few questions about effort from Dobbs in practice. Considering his S&C work and that the players elected him to their leadership council... I doubt he's lazy in practice.

On the contrary, his play as a Fr last year left them with the hope that if they could improve his strength and develop him during a RS year... they'd have a star for 3 years.

You saw passing drills. That's a very small fraction of what the staff uses to evaluate the QB's.

Peterman redshirted...the only thing he's wasted is opportunity.

dobbs is not a very polished passer, he has a long ways to go in my opinion. He didn't connect with malone or north last sat

Ferguson can be bagging groceries for all I care. I'm glad we have the Rocket Man. It's going to be fun to be a Vols fan again.
