Definitely not the sole problem, but he is a big problem. Most insiders around the program agree.
What insiders? If "insiders" believe the chancellor pushing higher academic measures (not talking Ivy standards here) is a "big problem," then nobody should ever listen to them. Cheek manages a university with a $1B endowment. The AD has $180M in debt for comparison.
A D is not a good grade, but a D is passing, giving credit for the course. WTF ???
I have heard from a former player who was recruited at Vandy that coaches told him that he could be admitted with a much lower SAT score than the general student. Can't remember something like 26 vs a 20 for a football player. Don't know about GPA though.
Question: UTK is a state university right? Then Cheek is a state employee? Just rambling a little but I would think that if this is true, then our beloved Govenor of TN could shed some influence.
If anyone has paid or partially paid for their education to a state university, then this statement would likely resonate with you. I would think that given the cost to enroll, buy books, labs, etc...that a transfer credit of any passing grade would be acceptable.
I am not advocating that a D grade is personally acceptable or that a D grade is a result of laziness but I have been through some difficult classes where a C- or D grade was a welcome sight to tired eyes. Of course I am not speaking of PE. ;-)
