We should be looking at continuing that deal... blame should be placed on SOMEONE in the university for letting that man set foot in our stadium.

Refresh my memory:

Why was Matthews not allowed to ref games in Neyland, and why isn't be allowed to ref Vandy games?

It seems that if he is that bad, he should be looking for other employment.

After a touchdown pass was called back on a holding penalty, Palmer's next pass was to WR Jabar Gaffney in the endzone. The ball made it to Gaffney's hands and was almost instantly slapped away by Vol cornerback Willie Miles. The official in the area signaled a touchdown, ruling that Gaffney had had possession of the ball long enough to be considered a catch. After a brief conference with the referee, the call was confirmed despite strident protests from the UT coaching staff and loud boos from the crowd. The extra point gave Florida a controversial 27-23 victory.[36]

The Volunteer squad and fans were incensed by the call, as they felt that Gaffney had never gained possession of the ball and that the pass should have been ruled incomplete. Vanderbilt alumnus Al Matthews, the referee who made the initial call, received death threats after the game and has not been assigned to officiate any games in Knoxville since.

He did play at Vandy and was a very good TE.

Also there is more than he just played for Vandy. In 1981 in the UT-Vandy game it was a close game, Vandy was down 4 and drove down the field in the closing seconds and on the last play of the game Vandy threw a pass to Matthews in the endzone and 2 UT players basically tackled him and no PI was called, UT won and Vandy fans, George McIntire (head coach at the time), and Matthews went ballastic about there being no PI call.

THAT is why he should not be officiating in the state entire state of Tennessee IMO. Also add to the fact that I think that non PI call against him was in the same endzone as he called the Gaffney non catch an actual catch.

I was at the 81 game but was only 12 years old and the play happened right down in front of us.

If you played football in the SEC you shouldn't be allowed to ref the SEC. Pretty simple.

Maybe it's just me, but if you have played for a team in the very conference you are now officiating, that's a distinct conflict of interest and you should not be allowed to ref those games.

Why isn't this a rule? The s**t calls that mf'er has made in Neyland says all you need to say---THERE IS A BIAS.

If we could have run the ball for at least 50 yards this thread might have legs. We didn't we lost, move on.

I think they escorted this guy off of the field in the 3rd quarter of the GA game. I didn't realize who it was. i was sitting in section P row 14 and I saw a police officer escort one of the refs off of the field to the club house. not for sure it was Matthews or the reason he left.

This ref was allowed to ref ut games once again when lame kiffin took over....what a piece of work...
