...by the Jets' new head man, in the context of Favre's lasting influence:

Mike T Recalls a Favre Play That Resonates

the mention is near the end of the article:

"That was Brett really in a nutshell, his unbridled enthusiasm to play football. And I think that will resonate with a lot of people, not just Erik Ainge, not just Kellen Clemens but a lot of people, to go out to practice, compete, make it fun, get your work in. I think that's Brett's legacy with us."

Note that Ainge is mentioned before Clemens, and Ratliff, the other QB supposedly ahead of Ainge on the depth chart, is not mentioned at all. A psychologist would say that Ainge might be in the lead for the starting job.

There's also full article on Ainge on the Jets' official site saying, quote, that he's "very visible on the QB radar."

Just thought it might interest all those who proclaim he's a career backup.

While an English major would say he was going alphabetical order by last name.

I brought back up the ainge thread the other week when Brett retired. I would love to see him grab the job!

Well I studied creative writing and I generally don't speak alphabetically.

I just think your looking into one quote a little too much. Couldn't you as easily say that this was said because these two QB's may need this resonation of passion for the game, while Ratliff may have already have it?

i don't necessarily think it means the job is ainge's to lose, but i do think it means that ainge and clemens are in the lead at this point. i think not mentioning ratliff isn't a good thing for him (ratliff). it also could have just been a slip up. who really knows for sure?

If Ainge doesn't do anything in camp this year, he's done with the NFL IMO. These guys rarely get more then a couple of years to prove themselves at that level before they are out of football. They will pick up someone as a free agent or draft another QB.

It just strikes me, from the context of the entire article, that Ryan is talking about how the team he fields this year, and for years to come, is going to benefit from Favre's one year with the team. He's not thinking about players that he sees as backups that won't be on the field, because he's thinking in one mode only at this point in his first job as a HC: what can I do to maximize my chances of winning enough games this year to be brought back next year. He doesn't have time to care equally for every player on the roster because if he did he wouldn't win a game and he'd be gone halfway through the season. I could be completely wrong, but I think the average person who knows nothing at all about psychology would not call it a great leap to say he's thinking of Ainge, at least at this juncture, as the starter.

But, only time will tell. If they draft a QB I reserve the right to rescind this analysis.

My point exactly. And, if psychology is relevant here and the first QB mentioned is also first in Ryan's mind, then Ainge is ahead (right now at least) of Clemens.

In any event, it should be interesting to see what develops. And damn cool if he gets a shot.

That's all fine and dandy, but what if he got off the phone with Ainge 30 minutes before the interview. I'm just saying there is all kinds of variables to why he said Ainge, any average person with any kind of logic at all wouldn't think it's a great leap to mention someone first that you recently talked to, or talked about to someone else.

Is Brian Schottenheimer officially coming back as the OC? Otherwise, I wouldn't put any stock into Ryan's comments. He's a career defensive guy that probably won't meddle too much with the offense. Regardless, he's been the head man less than a month, so I don't know if he's really ready to say anything about the QBs or anyone else.

I think Ainge has more time than we think. I mean I think the Jets knew when they drafted him he was going to be a project. But with a new coach coming in all that can change.

Yea, the NFL is overflowing with quality QB play Oklavol.

There will be more then a dozen QB's drafted in the NFL this spring for that reason, where do you think they find a room on the roster? By cutting linebackers? They cut back-up quarterbacks.

Yea and if he gets cut and still wants to stick around he probably can. DJ Shockley is still on the Falcons roster I believe. The NFL doesn't have 32 good starting QBs, much less enough to fill out the back up positions.

I've noticed that the more articles I read about the Jets and the quarterback situation, I see Ainge's name more and more and I think he will have a pretty decent shot at getting the starting job, I just hope he works hard and prepares himself right.

Well that's because you are using a laymen's way of logic to look at what Ryan said. Once you get into the psychology of things it all works itself out. It's crazy dude.
