Ok so I am NOT claiming insider status or searching for E cred whatever the he// that is good for. I am going to try to reveal a conversation I had today without implying anything or giving up the person in question. 1 because he is nice & 2 it was a causal conversation that I would like to continue to have in the future even though I am being kinda of a douche for coming on here and sharing without making it public who I was talking to.
He is a current staff member & is a prominent person on the staff not a secondary person. He comes in every few months & if I see him we usually chat TN & NFL.
The good. He said the QBs looked really good & will be better than people think. QD has an excellent knowledge of the offense & throws a great deep ball.
The off season has been very good & the team is focused and feeling confident this year.
The 17 & 18 classes are full of really good players. High character, driven players that will be very good for the future.
The ok. While the off season work outs have been successful, they haven't made the gains that they had hoped to at this point. They are far ahead of this same point from last year. He feels that the staff is a big upgrade but are still learning to work together.
What I took as negative.
He said Butch works his ass off & loves it here but has to put up with a lot of behind the scenes issues with the administration & boosters. I got feeling he was referring to the politics of the administration. He said they slow play the athletic department with issues that need to be fixed to help the program. I mentioned how Saban has the backing of the school, boosters, police, etc. He said it is night and day between how UT does things & how Bama does. He compared it to the NFL. If u need something to help the team or raises for assistants its done immediately. Same at Bama. He said they have been slowed played by the politics of UT for even the basic needs of the program. I could tell it was frustrating and something he didn't expect b4 he came here. The example he used was that apparently the Olympic athletic work out facility is being remodeled & they are having to share work out facilities with football which has slowed the teams progress. He didn't say it but it felt like football wasn't being given the priority it should be & he was troubled by that. It made me feel like he was having concerns about staying here in the future because of the politics of UT but he never said that. He said the all of the "Hotseat" talk has been very hard for Butch to overcome w recruits & coaches. At least one of the new coaches will not move his family here until after the season because of the uncertainty the spouse has because of all of the hotseat talk. It was really sad thinking about the sacrifice they are making to be here. I told him I have been around for a long time & seen the ups & downs & I believe we have turned the corner. He said Butch really is a good coach & can get it done here. People dont understand the uphill battle Butch has had to deal with. I told him I just hope we dont suffer the injuries this year like last year especially w the blocking schemes GT uses. He smiled real big & said the players are stronger and better prepared this year which will help w the injuries & then he grinned real big & said in a very matter of fact way, "we're ready for their blocking & we are going to kick their ass!" Which he followed with a fist bump. He wasn't saying it bragging, he was confident.
I just thought it was interesting hearing some of the background things they have to deal with & wanted to share. He said Curry is finding his way with the administration but believes he can help cut through the red tape moving forward.

The administration struggle has been obvious for a while. Same can be said about Kentucky and basketball. Thanks for sharing.

I can believe all of that. Unfortunately it's going take Butch winning the East and getting to a New Years Six game for the blind masses to stop slinging crap at him and the program. Even though we should really be praising the effort the man has put in to restore something we care so much about.

We're gonna be fine. Butch is smart enough to ignore the BS written about him. If any of our coaches leave, I'm sure they will be replaced with equal or greater talent. Coaches see what Butch is building here.

Couldn't agree more. The idiot fringe of our fanbase and media makes everything more difficult. Very frustrating.

Not surprising Fulmer has always said that about admin. I'm curious to how much pull he will have to change those now that he is back in house

Pretty similar to some of the stories I've heard. Hart was a bigger problem than most think. I think he punished Butch for cutting Lawson under contract.
That said, all ADs have politics and it's not isolated to UT. Even Spurrier dealt with that crap at UF. Look at the recent mess with Blackburn and Fulmer. I'm actually glad they went with Currie.

Saban is one of a few that has carte blanche.
Butch is on the hot seat, but what coach other than little Nicky isn't?

Butch being on the "hot seat" is a joke to the true fans who have watched our football program struggle the last decade. I don't listen to the fake fans or trolls, but if there are any true fan who want to go back to where we were before Coach Jones, then they're idiots. He has brought us back and it will only get better. We about to be where we were in the late 80's, 90's, and early 00's. That was when we had a chance to win 10+ games, SEC Champs, and big-time bowl every year.

It hasn't hurt him in recruiting to much. I predict a our true turn around is this year, a year later than expected but happening none the less. GBO!!!!

I appreciate the insight but as a long, long-time fan, it didn't sound like Tennessee football when you said it seems as though football doesn't have the priority. Sure, the administration makes mistakes but I am used to seeing Vol football fans as among the most rabid in the country.

So the swim team using the football weight room is why Butch didn't go for two against UF IN 2015!

It all makes sense now!

Makes a lot of sense now why he wanted Fulmer to come back in an official capacity and get Peyton to hang around more. Plus hired a new agent. All to Help throw a little weight around right back at the administration and boosters.

Gotta remember. Before we fahr Butch, Texas A&M is about to open up. I'd take that job over here without a doubt. Haha.

Letsss seee, psychos in East Tennessee wanting to fire you after every fumble or easy going A&M fans with like a billion dollar facility and better weather and right beside Dallas/Ft.Worth/Houston recruiting grounds? Hmmmmmmm.

Seriously though, good to hear the coaches are confident about this team. I think they've got a really good opportunity to take a lot of people by surprise this year if the team stays healthy.

Conversely, if Butch starts winning bigger, he'll probably gain more leverage to sort out some of that behind the scenes stuff.

If he gets tired of the BS I have no confidence in the boosters or ut admin bringing in anyone close to Butch.

I know you guys like to jump in any thread to be that guy but you really need to take a long deep thought on this.
If the boosters are micro-managing everytbing and the admin are treating the football team like track we've got bigger problems than b$%tching about winning 9 or 10 games.
If Butch was to leave because they won't let him run the show I can see a coaching hire so screwed up that we would find it hard to even consistently go 6-6 every year.

Well that clears up a lot here.

First instinct is normally legit.

You suggesting there is a chance Butch could go to A&M?

This thread has finally taken a positive turn.

Any casual fan of UT has known of the dung pile that the administration is on the hill.

Just further confirms it.

How about we wait and see how Butch does in year 5 before we decide we could never do any better
