According to Sexton, CDDs agent, Hamilton, Haslam and a few other advisers, CDD absolutely blew them away with his plan for Tennessee's program and steps he thought were needed to correct the situation. He also understood the time that would be required and was willing to commit to it all realizing that if he fails at Tennessee, he probably would never get another chance at a BCS program.. No other candidate came anywhere close to his understanding of expectations or had any outline/plan of how to attack it nor was there anyone close in the candidates interviewed when Kiffin was hired.

This does not shock me. At all. I hope we have reason for the 5th day of Christmas gift to be "Derek Dooooooley" for a long time coming.

No he was not a former player/alumni. He is a native of Athens, Georgia. His dad Vince Dooley was a coach/AD for the Georgia bulldogs for 30 years. He went to college @ Virginia where he played wide receiver. His previous coaching experience was at Louisiana Tech in the WAC.

No former associated with UT. He is the son of former University of Georgia coach Vince Dooley.

He came from LA Tech where he was both the AD and HFC.

Mushcamp wanted some outs that MH couldn't do. He strongly suggested DD. That was the door opener. It really didn't have much to do with Vince, but it doesn't hurt.

don't need to know about those games, that's the beauty of a coaching record...it tells it's own story, unless you care about moral victories

The "insider" in the OP is a booster (presumably a fairly important one) at La Tech. He became pretty close friends with the Dooley family while they were at Tech & now posts sparingly on VQ.

well, it's good to know that we have a coach who lives in the real world. that's all I have to say about that.

Dooley got the job, in my opinion, because 1) he's got some pedigree via his father; and 2 and most important, he's clearly a bright man who /interviews/ very well. I'm sure he was very impressive with his interview. He reminds me--at the NFL level--of Jim Zorn. He was a QB coach in Seattle, who was going to be hired as offensive coordinator at Washington--but he impressed so much in his interview that Synder gave him the top job. And I'm not suprised--Zorn is bright and an impressive guy to listen to and be around. But he flunked as a head coach--for various reasons, some if not most of which had to do with the fact that the team's personnel director was BAD, and Snyder is a stupid owner. So I hope Dooley is not another Zorn--and if he does two things well, he won't be; indeed, he'll succeed. He needs to recruit, obviously, and his coordinators need to be really good. I'm optimistic on both counts...but it must also be said that one could do both and still struggle given how brutal the SEC is nowadays. I think we're on a good track...
