Intense Competition Already Underway To Succeed Josh Dobbs

I think we could have success with it for at least this year... Im not sure either QD or JG are ready to handle the spotlight on their own.. but yes I agree. let it play out then we'll see who really has what it takes to lead this team.

I believe both are more than ready for the spotlight. QB's these days are so much better prepared and ready to play straight out of HS. HS systems are set up very similar and that's why every year you see more and more FR QB's starting at QB.

Anyone wondering about a 2 QB system?.. I have never seen Butch run it nor would I like to see it because it preaches instability at the position but JG needs to get on the field... he's an athlete. Dormady will start the season and will honestly probably finish it as the starter (experience) but with JG's ability he has to get some strong PT.

I've also seen Dormady play in high school.. he can launch it and is deceptively quick (no JG but he can still move)

Many a coach and more than a few players have pointed out through the years a two QB system means you don't have one.

I know I may get beat to a pulp for saying this, but let's ponder all three qb's getting playing time. I mean the opposition has to worry about QD's passing capabilities, JG's read option, passing, improvisions, etc, and maybe SJ in the wildcat, short yardage, etc.
From my studies on JG (no first hand bonafide knowledge), he looks to be a Dobbs 2.0 +.
Let's not announce a starter, keep the opposition guessing, put in (as the great Tim Irwin stated) a couple of real old Tennessee short yardage personnel and plays, mix in a few more pro-style plays, mix up qb's, old Tennessee formations, Lyle Lovitte Butch spread whatever the heck and perplex the hell out of the haters negative Nancies, Fl, Ga, AL, SC ATM and the rest of them.

I'll bite.. Yes we do

No . K-town is 100% correct. We run a 'pass to run' spread based out of the 4 vertical concept . The passing tree is a layered west coast read . That is the concept of this offense. The idea is to hit west coast style precision routes out of spread formations. These routes are short to intermediate. The field is spread and the LBs have to move outside the box. Then you run sprint draws and power runs with only 5 blockers.

The problem was , Dobbs is not consistent and and typically holds the ball longer than 2.4 seconds . Th DCs figured this out and keyed the LBs to the box and the run. Holding the ball too long let these precision routes 'time out'

So we would get behind by threes scores and the coaches would abandon their scripted approach and start running Dobbs out of zone concepts ...because that's what he does well.Which pulled the defense horizontally opening the interior run.

This offense doesn't feature much in the way of zone concepts. It features more power runs and gap schemes. I guess you would say we are a gap scheme team because we run a few gaps ? Or a screen pass team because we run a few screens ?

The coaches gave up on their offensive concept after the SC meltdown . They started using a 6th blocker and sometimes a 7th in the form of an H back. They started running almost exclusively power runs ...most of Dobbs runs were power runs . They kept Dobbs in the gun ...moving him under center would have hurt his accuracy even more

For my money , I hate there west coast spread . It is too QB passer dependent. Your QB gas a bad day ( Scar) you are screwed . Plus you need a 60% accurate , quick release QB . A pipe dream most of the time. I think the offense was headed in the right direction late in the season

I git it ...but the old adage of 2 QBs = No QB is right more often than not

I just want the best QB to start next year, I don't want QD to be named simply because he's older and has garbage time experience. If QD is named the starter I want it to be because he was the best in practice.

Agreed. In our case however, I really believe that both of our options for next year are winners. I really don't see how picking one over the other can be a mistake. To be honest, I believe both will be a step up for our offence

He didn't at Central Michigan and he didn't at Cincinnati. He started LeFevour and also Legaux over upper classmen

Legaux wasn't a sole starter. He started games but Butch rotated him and Brendan Kay in constantly. He ran two QB system with them. LeFevour was the "Tebow" of the MAC.

He didn't "rotate" them. Injuries were the main factor. Butch chose Legaux at the beginning of 2012...HE got injured and Kay came in and played better for the rest of the season. There was no two QB system.

My two cents, God given talent is great...but gimme a guy that's coachable, a leader, has a lot of heart to gut it out. Can concentrate on the moment, pumping other players in the huddle up, a guy you can beat on all day he still keeps comin at you. I ask myself why they don't interview question these players in the recruiting process for whats in a athletes mind and heart not just his athletic ability.

'Intense competition' already underway for Josh Dobbs' successor | Times Free Press

A snippet.....

This season and last, Dormady attempted 39 passes in mop-up duty while appearing in 10 total games, all of them blowouts. His strength is passing, and Tennessee would have to tweak its read-option offense to better suit him. He'll be the most experienced quarterback on the roster.

Jones redshirted last season and nearly transferred to Colorado before electing to return to the Vols, for whom he made his debut against Tennessee Tech last month when he attempted two passes.

Many in the program are the most excited about Guarantano and believe the talented former four-star prospect who's redshirting this season is Tennessee's quarterback of the future.

The expectation is the race will come down to Dormady and Guarantano, but all three will have the chance to start impressing their coaches and teammates when the Vols resume bowl practices next week.

"I'll help them out a lot," Dobbs said. "It started (Sunday) in the first bowl practice. They started getting more reps than they had been getting throughout the season. I tried to just coach them up. If they did something wrong, just help them and mentor them. If they did something good, congratulate them and just help them out any way I can."
Butch is gonna Butch it up. Ain't gonna matter.

I do agree with HS players being better prepped to play in a college system but to an extent... almost every HS runs the spread now with play calling coming off the wristband.. so in a sense i see where you are coming from but isn't that just football nowadays ?.. when i said they weren't ready i more meant along the lines of being the leader of the team. As a QB its your team to lead.. can you see QD or JG getting pumped and emotionally leading or inspiring the team ? Now Sheridan can for sure but he wont win the job by any means.. so i feel like we are just tossing this in the air and we'll all find out soon enough.. GO VOLS

Yes, I can see QD or JG either one getting pumped up and leading the team! When the OL sees how quick they get the ball out and the receivers have the ball delivered in stride, I believe the whole team will get pumped.

But i'm a sunshine pumper..

I look at pass ability and speed. Guarantano fast as Dobbs, built like Tony Robinson, I like him. Dormandy one dimensional . Tee Martin could pass and run when needed. I just think football has turned into a qb that brings everything to the position. Without Dobbs run ability last year, we would have lost at least 3 more games imo. I understand Jones loyalty to Dormandy but I want to win, not experiment.
