Informative and disturbing article about Dooley recruiting.

Not that it's an excuse, but a graduate assistant is more likely to know the area schools and the potential recruits considering the massive amount of turnover on the position coaches in the Dooley Era. This is critical piece for the new staff to rectify.

Its beating a dead horse at this point but 2 things i never understood about DD and recruiting.
1. He said he was going to focus on the 6 hour radius of Knoxville, well aside from Justin Hunter, we didnt do squat in Virginia. The Carolinas - I guess we did Ok in but were out recruited by USC , UNC and Clemson on the higher profile kids.
As far as Tennessee goes I thought he did cruddy, I guess many on here will say we didnt want half the kids we lost, but im not buying that.
2. So many recruits, Berry twins included, stated the communication or what kids call showing them love was a big problem. Thats not hard to fix just start friggin calling them.

You mean like Vonn Bell, a five star kid that everyone and their mother is after but Dooley had to be prodded into calling?

Sorry, Barbara, your boy sucked. Deal with it.

“If Derek Dooley had stayed as their coach, I would’ve had a hard time advising any player to go there,” current Hixson and former Rhea County coach Jason Fitzgerald said this past week. “That staff didn’t follow up or return calls, and really I had no idea who even recruits our area for UT because I’ve never had one of their coaches come through my door.

“I can tell you who recruits our school for Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, Missouri and even Tennessee Tech, because I have personally seen them here and get phone calls and emails from those schools and others,” added Fitzgerald, who played in the SEC at Auburn. “The only thing I ever heard from UT since Dooley was there was to advertise their camp and tell me how much it would cost.”

The lack-of-communication complaint was echoed by all 37 coaches who responded to the poll, and each said the staffs under former coaches Phillip Fulmer and Lane Kiffin seemed to care more about building a working relationship.

“To be honest, a lot of high school coaches in the state felt like Derek came across as arrogant,” Fitzgerald added. “We talked about that at coaches’ meetings around the state for several years, actually. It wasn’t just in the Chattanooga area; it was coaches all over the state. Derek is highly intelligent, but it just came off as him proving how smart he is when he talks. He just has no people
skills"

I used to think he was a pretty good guy. I don't anymore. Apparently (and this is coming from current players) The players respected Dooley because he had a law degree, they did not think he could win, All Sunseri did was talk about Bama non-stop and the players hated that and hated him and E Gordon has 3 kids and acts like a 14 year old. i wondered why Gordon did not play against kenturkey. Also, where they heck was Naz Oliver all year??? Hurt or what? this may be worthy of its own thread. Contemplating

I know and expect you all to hate Calipari, but whoever the next coach is it would hurt to employ someone to handle social media. You don't see kids walking aroung without their phones, twitter, facebook etc. I would imagine with the texting and calling legal now, most use twitter. In other words, going to have to get a coach to use every advantage.

Yeah from what I understand there are several recruits that are giving Tennessee a good look now that he is gone. You gotta make a connection with these guys if recruitment is going to be successful. However, I think with all of the choosing between hats and waiting until you can choose your school on TV some of these players feel like they are doing the school a favor by coming or just out for attention, and forgetting they are getting a free education too. Off topic i know, but oh well.

In hindsight now, our last few losses were invaluable. I know many VN folks didnt want to root for us to lose, but some of us did because we were hoping for a new coach. Too often Fulmer won his November games and kept his job but struggled in October - which is the heart of our schedule. We so much need a good October Coach at UT.

Dooley was a bargain bin hire, we got what we paid for there.. The recruiting has been mediocre.. The results on the field have been less than mediocre...

Dooley had the talent to win 7-9 ball games this year and blew it.. I hope he enjoys the buyout Hamilton gave him..

Don't know football in that area well, but it seems like a small school system. Are there even players that TN should recruit at that school? If not, then that's why they didn't hear anything. Too many places to get talent than to waste time. Plenty of high schools don't hear from college coaches, especially if there's not SEC talent.
