Here seems to be the most likely case:

Gerald Williams-JUCO(City College of San Fran)
Rae Sykes-JUCO(Coffeyville)
Cory Hall-JUCO(Coffeyville maybe?)
Rolando Melancon-Prep(Hargrave)
Deshaun Barnes-Prep(Hargrave)

Right now, Rogan has a little question as does Vinson but both look to be in. This isn't too bad since Williams has been in JUCO for a bit and we knew all along that Hall and Sykes were JUCO bound. The other two won't be huge losses since they will only be going to prep.

Also, since we oversigned, some had to be grayshirted or placed. If Rogan and Vinson get in, that means we got Brimfield, Rogan, Vinson, Fleming, and R. Williams in that all had questions. The main two we lost were Melancon and Barnes which we should get them back easily and both needed to gain weight anyways.

Well, that list isnt too long.. All of those guys needed extra time in the weight room anyways.. (except for Gerald Williams of course)..
And its good that Barnes and Melancon arent losing any eligibility.. :)

is it a sure thing that Melancon and Barnes are ruled ineligible, or is that just speculation?

i have never been clear, what exactly is grayshirting? is that when they enroll early to count toward the previous year's class?

grayshirting is when a kid waits until January to enroll, but still counts as a part of the previous class. If I am wrong on that someone correct me, but I believe that is right.

I know you posted that Melancon is Hargrave bound, but Dave Hooker wrote this in today's KNS:

The defensive tackle from Lutcher (La.) High School is still trying to improve his academic standing with Internet courses. But barring an incredible turnaround, Melancon is expected to be forced to attend a junior college before enrolling at UT.

I hope it is prep school, otherwise, its two years in junior college for a 6'1" defensive tackle. He could never see The Hill.

I don't see what 6'1" has to do with anything, but, yeah, we definitely don't want him to go to JUCO. I'd say this is yet another mistake by Hooker, considering a month ago, Melancon was on the fence as far as qualifying.

Here is some players from Rivals Top 25 DL for the upcoming season that are 6'2" or shorter:

1. Glenn Dorsey-6'2" LSU
4. Sedrick Ellis-6'1" USC
10. Eric Foster-6'2" Rutgers
15. Jameel McClain-6'2" Syracuse
17. James McClinton-6'1" Kansas

2 of the 4 AA DL from last year were 6'2" or shorter(Dorsey and LaMarr Woodley).

He was the #22 DT in last year's class and 9 of the guys ahead of him were 6'2" or shorter(including #1 DT Marvin Austin).

I'm just not sure the upside for a 6'1" junior college defensive tackle vs a 6'1" high school DT, especially considering that DT is a major need now.

A major need that won't be filled with true freshmen nor redshirt freshmen most likely. We took Jesse Mahelona. He filled an immediate need at DT.

I'm pretty sure Melancon went to some camps. As much as many of those other 9 DTs did.

Let's look at the shorter DTs drafted then:

Amobi Okoye 6'2" DT-first round
Brandon Mebane 6'1" DT-third round
Tank Tyler 6'2" DT-third round
Joe Cohen 6'2" DT-fourth round
Derek Landri 6'2" DT-fifth round
Matt Toeaina 6'2" DT-sixth round
Keith Jackson 6'0" DT-seventh round

Of the 19 DTs taken, 7 were 6'2" or shorter.

And it is possible that he grows a little more and a ton of DT's are 6'3" or 6'4".

I hate to see players opened back up to the recruiting process. If we suck this year they are more apt to be swayed by opposing coaches telling them Phil is gone.
