Having your hand on the ball doesn't show indisputable evidence that he doesn't have control until it reaches the plane of the goal line either. He was reaching for the goal line with the ball in one hand.

If it looks like it's coming out of his hand, they're going to call it a fumble.

And it looked like it was coming out of his hand. It doesn't matter what he was reaching for, he had to have demonstrated control of the ball as it broke the goal line, and the replay shows he didn't demonstrate that.
