A particular gripe that is common among the message board is the lack of enthusiasm from the crowd at Neyland Stadium.

I was wondering if UT installed a sound measuring device in the stadium (which would have the capacity to be illustrated by a meter on the jumbo-tron) and enticed fans to exceed a particular decibel level during defensive series a set number of times with rewarding incentives if this would get Neyland rocking again.

E.g. Stadium exceeds 110 decibels ( random esitmate given- record for a football game is 127 held by Oregon if you want to use a number a guide) over 10 times during defensive series, then fans will be refunded $5, or receive some some limited edition memorabilia to be handed out after the game, or earn vouchers for discounts on future tickets, concessions etc..

Just wanted to know if this has been done before or if anyone has good compelling arguments for or against it.

i think ive seen that meter thing before at a pro game but it just slowly went up and i didn't notice the crowd getting any louder. Maybe reverse psychology?

The loudest stadiums tend to be the ones where the home team is winning. The only place I've ever been that was loud and the team was lousy was Williams-Brice in Columbia.

I can scream louder than 110 decibels. thats weak. Now if it gets louder than 150+, jet engine style I'm all for it.

Or we could just dome Neyland and that'll increase dB by like 50%... kidding.

Really? I found the fans in Columbia to be quite lame.

When that place is full and they have hope . . . usually in the 1st quarter . . . that stadium can be a lot louder than you think. Part of the problem there is just like in Athens: the stadium has 85,000 in it, but one end of it is open in the upper deck and it doesn't keep noise in as well as some other places.

That's because those handheld meters they use are complete crap. You can get them for $50. As an active member of the SPL audio community I've seen those cheap meters differ up to 20dbs with the same exact test back to back.

I'll never believe what one stadium claims over the next unless it's done with an accurate meter. Then that exact meter must be used in every stadium. Until then it's hogwash. ESPN should shell out $700 for a Term-Lab meter and travel with it for ESPN gameday.

the loudest I remembering hearing it was ut vs Georgia game. i think it was in 2001 when Travis Stephens ran the screen pass for a touchdown. that was really loud. then John Chavis runs his prevent defense and Georgia made a drive and scored with no time left. i hate the prevent defense! chavis loved it.

Yeah those clowns love their gamecocks. Stadium at full capacity even when they were at their worst.

I was under the impression that SC was loud because they pumped techno through the PA for half the game.

I am too old to indulge at the games, but the shakedown of excited college students needs to stop. Let the kids and young adults have a little beverage to enjoy the game.

Having the away team right in front of us makes it even more fun now. Nonstop drunken verbal abuse.
