Incompetent Officiating?

Watching it again later, I really think Tennessee would have benefited more than GT from the refs being somewhat competent (mainly because of scheme) but they did miss calls on both sides. Not calling the block in the back when GT set up the field goal could have handed the game over because that would have been a major change in field position. There were some seriously questionable decisions by the refs but again, I think they weren't very good all around.

If they were required to drive their (or, is it "there"?) own cars to the games, their (or, is it "there"?) calls would necessarily improve.

I couldn't tell if it was a face mask or horse collar but something definitely didn't seem right. Then we never got a replay because we were in a hurry up situation

We never got replays because we were in Atlanta. This was NOT a neutral site game. It was an away game.

There were several close calls during the game. If the replay benefitted GT, it was shown on the Jumbotron. If it benefitted UT, no replay at the stadium.

Not true at all. I believe there were 3 penalties GT committed that were not called but were shown on replay.

facemask penalties or lack of a facemask penalty is NOT subject to review. In fact, refs can review the play but cant call a penalty if they see it in review. For example, they can review a catch or not but cannot call PI AFTER reviewing the play.

Not referring to penalties. Referring to official reviews. And besides, the replays on the Jumbotron were showing a big play, not the penalty.

Did you notice the knee down at the 19 by GT was not shown on the Jumbotron? Even though the official review showed it was down?

How about the review of Kelly breaking the goal line for a TD? Clearly broke the plane, but Jumbotron did not show the play. Officials reviewed.

The Jumbotron operator was quick to show replay, and even zoom to a close up, showing Wolf's long catch actually hit the ground.

They missed calls on both sides and didnt favor a team. They "let them play ", something most of us complain about when they call too much.

Didn't see it that way at all. Sure on the interior is one thing, but the missed targeting on Jennings, the big facemask, and the block in the back that led to points could cost us a game, and did lead to an injury( Jennings) .

The one low block called on GT helped us a bunch.

When "let them play" includes allowing dangerous hits going unpenalized, that sends a message to the players, don't count on the refs to make the right call.

Just to pile on - QB took off his helmet after a touchdown while still on the field of play, probably wiped an Evan Berry TD off the board

I'm pretty much with you on this. Would rather let them play as long as consistent on both sides.

But it was not. They let loads of things slide, and as the saying goes they could call holding on every play on either side, so ignore the holding. There was a lot of illegal blocks, block in the back, face mask calls that were not called. All with the result of favoring GT. I rewatched the film and the only ref that seemed to play it straight was the one who also called the ball hitting the turf on the 2 point conversion. JMOTIFWIW

Thank you, some people only see what they want.... I can find multiple clips of holding from UT and a pass interference. Like you said missed calls on both sides. It's funny when one fan base thinks all the calls went against them and the other fan base thinks the exact opposite.

I love Vols fans but we are the absolute worst at this "Eveeyone hates us" stuff.

I guess thats what we get whe. Derek Dooley has held the head coaching position. It really makes people crazy.

But at least we aint Alabama fans

So they only missed 3 calls and all of them would have benefited Tennessee?

I was there. Facemask was grabbed by lower bar. From behind. I exploded. Therapist said I would never play the violin.

The face mask was blatant and really didn't like how hard he jerked Calloway's head around. There was a replay after the touchdown and the ref was staring right at them. Maybe the hair obstructed it some.
But with the visible block in the back that had Butch irate and several non calls for motion on their offense, I thought they didn't do a very good job at all.

Big 10 crew, they're used to garbage football. Their brains are also preoccupied trying to figure out who are the "Big 10", and who the other two teams in the conference are.

The thing that bothered me was the fact that GT had players in the backfield moving toward the line of scrimmage illegally all game long. One guy goes in motion and then the fullback or another back was almost always moving forward slightly before the snap.
I'm so glad you mentioned that, Kinger. In the section where I was seated, it was about 50/50 UT/GT fans. A Tech fan in front of me, after I'd mentioned that exact observation to my UT Vol buddy seated next to me, turned around and commented that they always do that and that only against Clemson did they get procedure flags for it. He went further to state they'd be smart to keep doing it 'til it starts being called routinely. Personally, it appeared to us in the stands that the refs called an overall poor game, but with a notable slant toward favoring GT. Hey. I'll still take the W.

I thought the refs were horrible. There were times I thought GT was moving before the snap

I saw that about 5 or 6 times, heck I remember one of gt's linemen moved and then stood straight up thinking there would be a flag, and not one was thrown.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is, anybody else notice on the 2 point conversion attempt in overtime that the left side of GT offensive line was lined up a full yard back from the line of scrimmage?
