Former head football coach and current Athletic Director Phillip Fulmer got a $6 million buyout when he was fired in 2008, according to ESPN.

In 2011, men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl walked away with nearly $1 million.

Just a few months later, Athletic Director Mike Hamilton resigned, but was still paid a $1.3 million buyout.

Football coach Derek Dooley was fired in 2012, and UT just finished paying his $5 million buyout last year.

Chancellor Jimmy Cheek resigned in 2016, and now holds a role in the College of Education Health and Human Sciences. He earns $340,650 per year, 75 percent of his chancellor's salary.

Butch Jones was fired as head football coach in November 2017, and will receive an $8.2 million buyout.

Athletic Director John Currie was placed on administrative leave with pay on December 1, 2017, after just eight months on the job. He's receiving a $2.2 million buyout.

On Wednesday, the university announced the firing of Chancellor Beverly Davenport effective July 1. She will become a faculty member of the College of Communication & Information, and will earn $438,750 per year — 75 percent of her chancellor's salary — for the next four years. After four years, Davenport's salary will be adjusted to the average base salary of faculty members in the department.

Over 24 million in payoffs which does not include buyouts of assistant coaches. Add another $840k for the recent firing.

UT has established a level of incompetence that is second to none. This is not just one mistake but a series of mistakes that has brought the FB program to its knees.

There is a pattern brewing for Pruitt to be non-competitive against upper SEC teams and now he is non-competitive against the mid-lower tier teams.

while on the surface this seems insane - a couple of key points, here. The athletic department has a budget separate from the University - UT is not paying those coaching buyouts, the athletic department is. if you don't believe me, look into it.

Second point, when a coach is getting fired, the AD will line up a donor to cover the buyout up front, usually. So if you can imagine Haslam as the guy on the phone saying "Yeah, I got the buyout, just get a new coach" and then the coach is fired. It doesn't all come from one donor, usually, but several big time athletic dept. donors will step up and cover that cost.

You mixing the athletic department and university academic side together. Cheek and Davenport have nothing to do with the athletic department. Also if you do a little research this happens at university’s all over the country. Does this make it right, not sure, but UT is not the only one by far.

As I said earlier. It happens at all colleges. Look at Arkansas. Last two football coaches will be paid a total of $22 million to coach elsewhere. Or take Notre Dame, they paid $19 million to make Weiss go away. Those are just a quick example of buyouts. Until someone draws the line, colleges will have to put it in contracts to hire coaches.
