One person's logic is another person's cow manure.

Forget Dooley for a second, even though he is the leader. Baggitt, Chaney, Hiestand, Wilcox, Thompson. All have coached in major winning programs in college and/or the NFL. Three in that group have worked with NFL stars, not counting Sirmon's playing days. Did they get stupid all of a sudden when they came to UT and agree to work for CDD?

I think not. Patience will be rewarded.

Uh,oh. Now you've done it. You've gone and nuked his argument. Expect to be chastised for failed logic, lack of common sense, etc.

Please tell me how it "nukes" my argument which is that it makes zero sense to state the following:

Supporting the coach = Believing that he will lead us to championships

Being realistic about Dooley being that kind of coach = Being negative

Neither of those statements make any sense. Those ideas are totally separate from each other. I promise that it's possible to do the first without doing the second.

His best year will be 9-3 and worse 6-6.
If you are happy with that he is your guy.
He simply will not work hard enough or demand his
staff do the work to achieve greatness.

Save the Herschel years at Ga what did Vince do?

Honestly, it's going to come down to the same thing that I've been saying all along......recruiting! Dooley's success is going to depend on whether or not he can recruit the upper echelon players. If he were coaching in the big 12, I would say a #10-15 ranked recruiting class would get him the big 12 championship. However in the SEC, it's just not going to cut it folks. Unlike others on here, I DO believe that the rankings mean something and Dooely is going to have to pull some #1-#5 ranked classes if he hopes to win the SEC. Sorry but I think that is the reality. You have to win the battle in February if you want to in December/January.

I don't see how anyone could be anything but undecided at this point. Of the poles, I lean towards yes. I like what he says and does, but we need to see big time results by 2012.

I don't know if Dooley is the answer.

I can tell you that I deeply resent the Athletic Department dumbing down the schedule to make it appear that Dooley is a good coach. We cancel North Carolina and schedule Buffalo to insure another win to make everyone believe that a new day has arrived.

I think Dooley should be judged on how he fares within the SEC. That will be the true gage and not his won lost record when we are padding the schedule with Buffalo, Montana, and MTSU.

Dooley has calmed the waters which needed to happen but on the field we have beaten no one of consequence and in fact neither has Dooley as a head coach. I for one would like to see him outcoach someone other than Vanderbilt.

I don't agree with this at all. If Dooley fails, it won't be because he doesn't work hard enough. He doesn't strike me as that kind of guy.

Its hopeful thinking. I voted that because if I didn't believe that, why would I bother following the team?

I hope it happens too, but that doesn't cause me in any way to believe that it will. It's a small, small group of coaches that turn into that caliber. At this point in his career, there is nothing to suggest that he will make that leap... there's also nothing to suggest that he will remain where he is right now. There's a huge gap though between a sub .500 coach and a championship level coach.

CDD came in very late after Lame quit and held & put together a decent class. He had no depth (especially in the trenches) and was left with nothing except some great receivers, a freshman QB and JJ. I'd say the first year was about all one could hope for. We all know he should be 1-0 in bowls at this point. I think he has hired good coaches so let's give him some time. Nobody knows at this point.

I'm sure about one thing:

Derek Dooley is the head football coach at the University of Tennessee, and THAT makes him MY coach. I'm behind him 100%.

For anyone to say that they "know" how a particular hire will turn out is ridiculous. After Nick Saban's first season at Alabama (where they lost to SE Louisiana State, I think), I'm sure that there were quite a few Bamers who were lacking confidence that they had made the right move. I'm not saying that Coach Dooley is going to be the new Saban, but come on ... tell your Ohio State buddy to get back to worry about Jim Tressel's job status.

Go Vols!

It is absolutely false that Dooley doesn't have the drive to be a championship coach.

He may not have the talent at the end of the day... but he definitely has the drive.

You do know what Saban did at LSU right?

Right.... that's why Dallas Vincent is showing out in practice right now, correct? Zach Fulton was a lowly 3* remember?

Let's be absolutely clear. It DOES take talent to win the SEC. The rankings do mean something. But the rankings do not mean everything and a program that averages around 10th is NOT going to be so badly out manned that they cannot win the SEC... the rankings just aren't that precise.

Auburn just won the SEC and NC.... Want to guess what their avg recruiting class was over the last four years? 12.5.
