with a top 5 recruiting class (per Rivals.com):

That just further illustrates what a fantastic recruiting job Coach Jones & his staff did this year. :yahoo::salute:

Excellent observation. Pretty sure UT was the only one of the three that had 4 losing seasons in a row before it happened. Which makes it even more fantastic. :dance2::dance2::dance2:

Interesting. Those were two stacked classes, but I have to say the job Butch did was more impressive IMO.

That Miami class featured 12 signees from within the city of Miami alone, including 8 4-stars and a 5-star. 8 of those 12 were also from that amazing Miami Northwestern squad which may be the most talented high school teams in recent memory. Great job of locking up the kids in their backyard, but easier to access those kids. They had 2467 rivals points against our 2600 this year.

The Nebraska class was obviously solid as well, but they only had 2178 points on rivals that year. We had 2600, which would've been good for second in the country that year.

Not trying to knock those classes, because they are very good comparisons, but our class stacks up well against those classes.

Nebraska also had a coaching change in there as well to Pelini in 2008...I am sure that added to their attrition. Tenn needs stability in addition to better recruiting. I think we will get there.

Butch is running a marathon not a sprint. A Top 5 class (hallelujah, GBO!!) needs to be followed up consistently with other highly regarded classes along with maintaining a stable coaching staff. I'd be curious to know what the rankings of the followup classes were at the U and Cornhuskers, notwithstanding the innuendo, rumors, and negativity that preceeded coaching changes at both places which we, unfortunately, know all too much about.

Per Rivals

Miami
2009 - #15
2010 - #16
2011 - #36 ? violations/sanctions/coaching change
2012 - #9

Nebraska
2006 - #20
2007 - #13
2008 - #30
2009 - #28

Neither followed up that Top 5 class with consistent Top 10 recruiting.

That's gonna be the key, to keep the momentum going. We need to have a good 14 season and I could see this staff, (with the help of the players) keeping the ball rolling. It's gonna take more than one good class to get us relevant again. We certainly got a good start today though.

Exactly, they both had attrition and no subsequent good classes to follow.

Hell, even look over the quality programs in the last couple of years (LSU, Bama, etc). Look at some of their classes and see how many names you don't recognize.

The key is consistent recruiting... not boom and then bust recruiting. That's what plagued Fulmer in his last years. #4, #38, #6, #31

It was too up and down. There wasn't a constant flow of depth/talent to resupply from injuries and the normal ebb-flow of college athletics.
