People need to realize that Sal coached up and was surrounded by top notch players at Bama day in and day out. The guy at this point in his career can probably tell within 30 seconds of watching a player if the guy is a stud with NFL potential.

On the flip side, Wilcox was surrounded by average talent on the BS teams and was not well equiped to judge what talent level there needed to be in the SEC. It wasn't really his fault but he is not, nor will be in the future it appears, an SEC coach.

The fact that Sal has been not only in the SEC for many many years but knows what level it takes to win big sets him apart from Wilcox. He just knows what to look for.

This little distinction will set us apart very quickly from the old regime and when Sal offers a kid (no matter what the star level is) people better realize the guy just offered is a baller.

Trust in Sal. All he has done is win.

He has worked for some good coaches and elite talent. John Fox is a helluva a mentor on the defensive side of the ball.

This. I think Wilcox's schemes will work very well in other leagues. Bend don't break will only produce average in the SEC. Sal is off to a great start IMO. Let's see how it translates to the field this fall.

Wilcox is a good coach, around FB his whole life, daddy was a 49er, and he's much younger than Sal. talent level was woeful during his time here.

Listening to Sal talk and his enthusiam, I think players will love playing for him. I think that will show on the field. His NFL background and experience at Bama, I don't believe you will see some of the same mistakes made by the defense as last year or at least it will not be tolerated like it was last year. I really look for our secondary to be in better positions and not so many blown coverages. I think our LBs (if the DL plays assignment football) will make some huge plays this year. Exciting to think about.

Just curious...How is Sal off to a great start?

Looking at Lance Thompson's tenure here, while I believe Sal can get it done, he's yet to land a high rated LB, that can be a true game changer for us.

I'm going to reserve judgment, one way or another, until I see the W/L column, and how our defense performs.

Sal will do well as he brings in the big guns. I really like the references to him screeming at the d to get to the qb. I don't care what anyone says the pass rush is pure desire and we didn't have it last year.

Excellent points. Even if we had Sal day 1, he still would have had to work with the limited talent he had. Saban had to do the same thing when he took over at Bama except he didn't have to start over from scratch like we did.

More to it than desire, gotta have some muscles, talent, and coaching/development. I can have all the desire i want but if I can't get there no sack.

I know he's a better fit. He knows about the SEC, it's expectations and has been on teams that won a lot of SEC games. Wilcox is a smart guy and a NW guy. SE is a different world. We aren't his type of people.

Hindsight. He's a hot name for an up and coming coach, but the SEC isn't for everyone. If he was always going back, DD should have stayed more local, but it may work out better in the long run.

I think Sal is a better fit for us than Wilcox

I guess if you mean that a DC that somehow took that crappy defense to top 40 this past year is a better fit than someone who hasn't coordinated a defense this millenium...then sure.

Just curious...How is Sal off to a great start?

1) Did you watch the D during the Orange/White game?
2) Have you read/heard the comments of the current roster and recruits of the most recent class?
3) McCullers, Sentimore and McNeil (among others) are Vols because of Sal.
4) Have you noticed the intensity level increase, not just the D, but the whole team?

Positives due to Sal. We will see if it translates to the field in the fall.

1)Sentimore was already signed when we had Wilcox, and Mcneil was already committed.

2)Santos and Peters split on Sals watch. They decommitted for different reasons and I don't necessarily blame Sal, but results are results.

3)As far as the OP's remarks I do agree with most of them but I'm not sure how 4 years in the SEC= "many, many years".

I'm not down on Sal at all, I'm very excited for the season, but I think we should keep our expectations in check until he delivers.

Well...Sal is the new coordinator and Wilcox is the old one, so therefore Sal is better. You need to get on top of your VN logic man.

Sounds like you could get hyped up over a stale piece of bread. Let's wait until after he's had some games under his belt as a coach, here...before we start building a statue (cough. Saban. cough) for him.

I think Sal will be better all around than Wilcox.

I agree. Overall, Wilcox did a decent job considering what he was working with, but he was not building an SEC type defense. We won't know until we have several games under our belts, but I expect the biggest difference our defense under Sal is that we will play much more aggressively and with more passion under him than what Wilcox was teaching.

Yes, we will still make mistakes (especially the first year) but by being more aggressive will force more errors by the opposing offenses -- both mental and physical errors. The net result should be that we will give our offense more chances with the ball rather than giving up long drives that wear our defense down.
