Why in the HELL did David Cutcliffe leave Tennessee again to go coach Duke?? How could he possibly think he would be in a position to be successful there?? The Ole Miss job, yeah I could sort of see. But DUKE?? Why was he so anxious to get out of Knoxville a second time? Especially after his known health problems.

Located in the Southeast, low expectations, good money. I don't see the issue here, it wasn't like he was about to get the Oklahoma job.

I know that you are just asking an honest question and I thought Cutt was OK (a little predicable in the running game) but I just have NO desire to go backwards

Duh!!! He obviously wanted free tickets to the Duke/Carolina game every year! Have you ever tried to get a ticket to that game before??

After the way he was ousted at Ole Miss, basically as a rental coach for Eli, I would think a comfortable Head Coach position was attractive.

Oh no, I'm not suggesting we go get him NOW. I guess I'm more or less speculating how different the 2008 season might have been if Cutcliffe had stayed instead of Fulmer bringing in the "Clawfense." My guess is that Crompton would've been FAAAAAR more productive and our QB situation would not have been the equivalent of the Hindenburg. We had a darn good amount of talent that year and looking back, it's such a shame that a team that loaded was squandered.

Completely agree with this.

Even Wake Forest has higher expectations. He gets to be around a lot of smart people in a pretty place and make really good money without needing to produce great results.

He also does not have to work nearly as hard on recruiting because 70% or more of kids are already off the table for him before he sits down.

After his Ole Miss experience and the heart problems, I'm not sure he was in a position to turn down any head coaching job in a BCS conference.

It seemed he was wanting out again even before that. I think after 2006 it was rumored that he interviewed for and then turned down the OC job with the Cleveland Browns.

I have no idea why he wanted to move so bad but in my opinion if he stays at UT, then Fulmer is still here now. For whatever reason that combo of Fulmer, Cut and Chavis really produced results.

Yeah I get that but why Duke?? That's not exactly putting yourself in position to be successful is it.

Actually it is. No pressure to win. If you can pull off one upset once in a while, you're golden The biggest challenge for any football coach at Duke is to remind the student body on a consistent basis that Duke actually has a football team

He makes more money as the HC at Duke than as an offensive coordinator at Tennessee. So, he spends a few years making decent money and if they eventually fire him (and he still has the desire) he can go back to being an offensive coordinator.

Cut was not very impressed with either of the q.b's on the team. He didn't care for Compton and he didn't care for the kid from Chattanooga, B.J. Coleman either.
I guess they either didn't have much talent or they did have a learners attitude and he felt he couldn't coach them.

he pretty much brought Coleman to Knoxville so I doubt any of that is true

Screw Cut, imo he's not welcome back in Knoxville. Screwed us twice.

He wanted to return as Fulmers replacement, but Hamilton told he could not bring his staff from Duke.
That may have been an easy out for Hamilton to not hire him, though. It sounds too convienient.
Kiffin brought his own staff and Dooley brought his own staff too.
So, Cutcliffe didn't really screw us. Could you imagine what it would have been like after Sanders was fired and Cut didn't return? 2006 was a good season and 2007 we were in the S.E.C. Championship game. Would we have done that well, with out Cut?

I think so too. Looking back, I'll bet if those 3 had stayed intact, we would've drilled UCLA in the opener and it would've set a VERY different tone for that season. We would've most likely lost to Florida and Alabama but I be we would've beaten Auburn, Georgia, DEFINITELY Wyoming, and possibly South Carolina too. Yeah I know, coulda woulda shoulda.

If a person is scared to turn any program around, they probably do not have what it takes to be a great coach. Don't get me wrong. I agree that DUke is similar to Vandy as being a graveyard for coaches, but the mentality of strong coaches believe they can fix any and everything.
