In game coaching grade on the new coaches

As others have mentioned on other threads, going to the left seemed to work much better than anything else. I'm surprised the coaches didn't milk that for all it was worth.

Bad calls on offense, no offensive line to speak of, and defense was terrible. 40 points, yes 40.
If this is Pruitt s idea of getting a team in shape, it will be a long year.

My only complaint about play calling is our continuously running the ball up the middle with very little success. But I guess you never know till you try it a few times.
The fact that we didn't run for 250 on them is troubling. They were absolutely horrific against the run last year.

You are what your record says you are.

We are very aware of our record, as well as the score on Saturday. What we are looking for is signs that things may be changing. Meanwhile, back under your bridge!

Pruitt looked like Bear Bryant compared to Taggart tonight. If that man's football IQ were pennies you wouldn't be able to get a McChicken

The way Grier was placing the ball was unstoppable for any defense. Hats off to him

I thought that the receivers (especially the slot) had too much cushion. For example...looking at the last touchdown...they were on the 10 yard line...our DB gave the wide out an 8 yard cushion. When the receiver hits the end zone, the DB is still nearly 5 yards behind him. He is wide open, and Grier makes the easy throw.

While yesterday was a rude awakening on many fronts, I was wondering what the take away on in game coaching was. Noticeably, I haven't seen it mentioned in a single thread or on game day. Unlike during the Butch Era, there didn't seem to be crazy time outs where I was scratching my head, terrible time management or a bunch of horribly bad calls that everyone could see coming. Once the score jumped and we had to drop the run game, we became more predictable of course. Mostly what I saw was a failure to execute and guys fumbling around trying to learn a new scheme perhaps. The two long drives we put together seemed more of an indication of the Helton plan.

Pruitt came out and said that he missed it on a few calls (refreshing an HC taking responsibility for once) and I was really hoping they would do a better job of coaching up the "talent" we have (which may not be as talented as I thought). Perhaps we just arent that talented and need better players and/or Pruitt needs a full year to get everyone on to a 3-4 and teach basics after Butch & co.

Oh, one other bright light - 1 injury (Chandler) from someone ringing his bell. Seems we are better prepared with our S&C at least.

Overall, though, the in-game (and that ballsy 4th and 1 call) gave me some hope that once we get some players or get these better trained, we at least wont be cursing the calls on game day.

Not sure I could grade the coaching because I saw what the players were like and cant get past that. The coaching staff never really had any big decisions to make (except for that 4th down call). I need more data.

2 runs up the middle in 2nd quarter, when Gaurantano was hot throwing seemed a bad call. Drive ended up stalling, and they got the ball back with time to go score

Completely killed the momentum we had going. We convert there we have a good chance to take the lead.

My grades by unit.

DL C Held their own but didn't do what was necessary.
LB D I thought they were far below what was expected didn't disrupt anything all day
CB D Young and inexperienced got schooled.

OL C Started out terrible came on a little after the first Quarter
TE C Couldn't block but definitely a weapon when we decide to use them on offense
RB Jordan good everyone else no good
QB Good needed to be turned loose in the passing game against their weak secondary.

Coaches everyone gets C's or D"s Helton the lowest grade we don't need conservative play calling when were fourteen down and more.

On another note, I really didn't like the time-out prior to going for it on 4th down (on our 1st TD). Time-outs are valuable (albeit less valuable in the 1st half). My point is, the staff should wargame and pre-decide this in game planning well prior to kick-off. You just run through a bunch of likely scenarios and play the what-if game, and make the call.
I agree with most of what you said except the timeout. While you can game plan and have some idea of what you may want to do on a 4th and goal, situations change and I have no issue calling a timeout to get the right play called. I get your point about timeouts being valuable, but so is 7 points on the score board and seems like a perfect time to use one.
