There are lot of nasty words for Worley on this forum. And there have been a lot of bad plays from Worley this season.
But I want to throw my support behind him for 4 reasons.
1. The guys works his tail off to get better. You never hear a word about him slacking, not caring, blowing off watching film, etc... He gets benched for the Florida game, but comes off the bench to give it his all. Never complains. I realize his "all" may be less than what is required to be a successful QB in the SEC, but he's a Vol and what is asked of our Vols is that they "give their all for Tennessee". Let's give him our support.
2. He's the best we got right now. Peterman played WAY worse than Worley in the Florida game. Our true frosh Ferguson and Dobbs have apparently done nothing in practice to demonstrate that they could do better. We can be honest and truthful about Worley's bad passes and poor choices, but shouldn't we get behind our best option at QB and support him?
3. He's working with (basically) all first-year receivers. Croom was a redshirt last year. North and Smith were playing high school football 12 months ago (and North was essentially an RB). Young is injured (and was an RB under Dooley). Howard is a first year starter in the slot. Timing and rhythm with receivers makes a great QB. Worley alone isn't the problem.
4. He's in a new offensive system. I had hoped that we would be hitting our stride by now, but we aren't. Coaching problem? Talent problem? Both? I don't know. But combining point 3 with this point makes it doubly difficult.
I don't see how saying "he sucks" or "he's the worst Tennessee QB ever" or any of the other insults and verbal beat-downs thrown his way helps him - or the team.
Flame away at me. That's fine.
But putting your hopes in Riley Ferguson or Josh Dobbs as the next iteration of Johnny Manziel seems like a much greater leap of faith than believing Worley and his receivers can grow into a solid offensive weapon over the next 7 games.
