In defense of Mike Debord:

First let me say, I believe a coach should be allowed to hire who they want to and if they succeed or fail, it's on them. Hopefully, Butch succeeds, I know we all want that but I don't think Hart, the fans or anyone else should influence this decision, not saying that is the case as I don't know.

As for Debord, I have no issue with his age, at all. I just don't understand a few things. I don't understand how he is a "fit" when he never called a spread and or read option offense and was always in pro-style with a fullback. I don't understand why he was never retained when a new staff took over, at least once. I know some coaches replace everyone regardless but others keep a guy or two and he was never one of them.

I don't understand why he's been available the past 3 years either, why hasn't someone picked him up by now if he was such a hot commodity?

I don't know who will coach QB's and please don't say Nick Sheridan. He may be great but QB coach shouldn't be relegated to a GA and Debord hasn't done it since 1986 at some place many of us have never heard of.

Honestly, most of us were pumped when we heard Monte Kiffin would be DC so it isn't an age issue, it's a coaching and fit issue.

Why not just hire Fulmer and I'm not advocating that but it makes about as much sense.

If Debord took the time to read VolNation he would turn us down with hesitation. Who would want to coach a team that has fans who are immature, lack basic football knowledge, and are *****ing about something that hasn't happened? Nobody.

But when it comes to calling plays from the booth, give me a cool head and lots of experience any day!

Of DeBord, Daniel Lewis of Rocky Top Insider writes:

"Perhaps Jones sees this as an opportunity to further intertwine the spread principles that are in place with him and his current staff with some downhill, pro-style running elements . . ." !

Agree w/ your overall message, especially regarding age. But my biggest concerns are that:
1. five years of experience as OC isn't "lots," especially when you consider the 18-year timespan from when he first called plays; and
2. his offenses at Michigan were decent but far from dynamic, especially a running game that averaged under 3.9 yards per carry.

All this age discrimination is pretty ignorant. The guy took a break away from coaching. So freaking what. Bill Snyder did the same. Anyone going to argue that old guy can't coach.

Also stop with the ignorance that the spread offense is so exceedingly complex that a successful college OC cannot comprehend it. It's not damn rocket science.

It may just be me, but I don't think that scheming or play calling takes a tremendous amount of brain power. The real concern is player development. If DeBord is good with the Oline and running game then great! I think we all can agree that we lost several games last year by being bad on the offensive line: Georgia, Oklahoma, Florida. It's not the X's and O's it's the Jimmys and Joes that win the games for you. If Jones feels that DeBord can help our players be the best they can be then so be it.....we will win alot of games.

Ok so you're going to bring up Wooden and Bryant. Well you should know that each one of those guys spent 25 years STRAIGHT at their positions. Neither one took an 8 year break.

So does Ohio State employ a 58 year old former OC who hasn't called plays in college for 8 years? How about Alabama? Baylor? TCU? Oregon? UGA? Auburn? FSU?

It has been some years since he called a game...but he humiliated Urban Meyer/Charlie Strong's Florida defense for 524 total yards and 41 points using spread offensive football schemes that he had learned from getting coaching in the off season with Peyton Manning's former mentor....and Peyton will tell you Tom Moore is an offensive guru at the age of 76.

Kind of answers part of your question.

I just don't understand what all the hoopla is about. Everyone knows this is Butch's offense. Whoever takes over as OC is going to run his offense regardless of where they come from or what type of offense they were previously running. IF DeBord is hired, at least he knows this coaching staff and how they operate. The last thing we need is to take a bunch of sophomores who just figured out Butch's offense and make them learn a whole new system.

Im not pushing for DeBord, but it could be worse

Everybody griped about Jancek cause he got fired from Georgia, but he's done wonders with our defense.

You don't know how a guy will work out until he's here. I'm confident our system and coaching chemistry will allow Butch's choice to fit right in. Keep in mind we're only changing one guy, not 6 guys on one side of the ball.

This is just a thought, but how about wait until the official hire of whoever before some of you freak out. To many people are flipping out because some yahoo had a "source", and nothing from Jones yet. I've personally read through 2 threads of a guaranteed announcement, 1 was gonna be Monday, the other was it was gonna be yesterday. Everybody freaking out because some poster knew some inside info that turned out to be bullcrap. After the gruden debacle you'd think some would have more sense.

Discussing possibilities is one thing, losing it over a posters guarantee is another.

17th nationally in total defense in 2009. Held the eventual national champions without a single TD. Yeah, that was just awful.

Tripped over a sprinkler head after that...he ran a clinic on HOW NOT to defensively scheme against Ole Miss...that same year...and in concurrent years forced his own son to fire him at their next stop.

These people comparing DeBord to Bill Snyder, Urban Myer, etc. just to make an excuse for Debord taking a "break" (cough! cough! "not being retained/sought after") is just utter ridiculousness! DeBord was never equivalent to any of these bigger name coaches so that comparison or analogy is complete garbage.

Monte's defense was great....against traditional offenses. Against the spread the Tampa 2 didn't fare so well.

Nobody is writing him off because of age

We are writing him off because he hasn't coached as an OC in over 8 years, hasn't been mentioned for any coaching vacancies at any other school, and is so knowledgeable in football that hes been relegated to Michigans version of an Artic outpost

Nailed it.

I'd take Tom Moore and Dick Lebeau in a second as coordinators.

It isn't the age.

Well I'm sure a more adequate comparison could be made but IDK many that give a damn about OCs unless they're searching for one. Honestly before this search do you think even 5% of this board could tell you who the hell Debord was? I only set it as 5% because some were here when Fulmer conducted the search with him as a candidate. Do you think even 1% could tell you who the OC of Marshall, Western Ky, or East Carolina was before we needed an OC? Everyone becomes an expert on what we need when we start looking, google is their primary research tool.

Basically just trust Jones to conduct his own search and choose his own candidate. If he can't choose a guy to run "HIS OFFENSE" then we have a helluva bigger problem than just the OC position. So in closing "Keep calm, trust in Butch, resistance is futile, may the force be with you".

Meh, I blame the Ole Miss letdown on the great Pilot Cheeseburger Heist that happened the week of that game.
