Improvement in 2012

I forgot one thing...you mentioned a return for a touchdown. With Cordarelle Patterson back there, you will see multiple punt / kickoff returns for touchdowns in 2012. He is really good as a receiver. But he is GREAT as a returner! If you have watched any of his film, in open space, he is simply amazing. The new kickoff rule is going to reduce opportunities on kickoffs, but I still predict that if they let him handle both punts and KO's, he will return 3 or 4 for touchdowns in 2012. He is outstanding! Devin Hester like...it is truly amazing!

Agree here, especially on KO returns. With him and Devrin both back there, its gonna be pick your poison for the kicker.

I agree with the first 2.

I don't see the d-line improving as much as everyone else. Malik Jackson is a huge loss. I look for us to stay about the same there.

Improvement by committee is still improvement.

Is losing Jackson significant? Yes, sure it is but don't discount the improvement of the rest of the guys along the line and the addition of our JUCO guys.

Not to mention a stable full of new defensive coaches and schemes. I'm excited about CSS and his D.

All these plus...

The center position. Our center's performance was awful last year. From just snapping to being able to know his assignments. An entire offseason, spring practice, summer workouts, and fall camp should have Bullard ready to go. He should be able to focus on being the captain of the line. This will greatly help the running game.

1. DL - because of depth
2. WR - we have so many good ones and a great QB to deliver
3. Fanbase - because we will have more to cheer about! Neyland might become a tough place to play at again.

Which three areas do think have the best chance of improving in 2012, and why? Be as specific as you can.

1. D-line production in stopping the run.
2. Getting pressure on the opposing QB.
3. Overall Offensive production...

The product of these improvements will of course yield more wins in 2012....and a bowl game win. 9-4 prediction...:salute:

Southern Gentleman. Ha Ha!

1. Wins. If Dooley doesn't (can't) improve on 5 and 6 wins over the last two seasons, respectively, he's phoning it in...this team is built for 8 wins easy.

2. Passing game. Yeah, I said it....and we made some strides last year--without Hunter for 3/4 of the season. With the addition of CP, a healthy Hunter, and (hopefully a more mature) a more seasoned Rogers...we're poised to lead the conference in passing yards. Not to mention Rivera and Cam Clear...

3. Secondary and Pass Rush. This is a two-parter, IMO, b/c the pass rush, I think, is going to be much improved as well, but that translates to the guys in the secondary even more, IMO. Guys like Moore, Lanier, Randolph, Coleman, Brewer, etc. are all "due." With the addition on the DL of Sentimore and McCullers, and the improvement of guys like Couch and J. Smith...it bodes well for significant improvement in both areas.

I feel that the d-line might sufefr a little at the start of the year, along with the secondary, mainly because of implementing the 3-4 and playing more 3-4 compared to the 4-3. We now have the bodies to play the 3-4 but it's going to take a few games to get used to it. From what I've heard, they (CDD and Sal) are going to implement the 3-4 a bit slower than most, making sure the guys truly understand the scheme. In the end, I really feel good about our chances of a possible 9-3, maybe "dare I say?" even better than that. We are going to need some of those "lucky breaks" that we have missed out on for the last few years. We should be due some of those breaks.

RB. I think we have a better back in Lane, and a potential beast in Bourque. Plus our OL has to be better.

QB. For one thing I don't expect our starter to miss multiple games, and if he does, atleast Worley has SOME experience to lean on. Plus never know how Peterman might turn out.

COACHING. I seriously believe we have upgraded in every change. It might take a bit to show on defense though as a whole new system is being implemented. Recruiting I believe we upgraded in every slot except DL, although as I typed I think Palermo is a better X,&O's coach, just not a good of a recruiter as what's his name.

Isn't this usually seen as a negative?
It probably is, in most instances, and will be with us initially. The negative to that is the implementation of a new defensive scheme in the 3-4. I think the upside is that our new coaches are much more SEC friendly with quite a bit of yrs. of southeastern philosophy in their background. That said, I think we will be better in the long run but will suffer some growing pains because of the player-coach interactions a nd just geting used to. Most of our recruits have mostly southeasterrn roots, and as anyone can attest, even the jargon spoke in this area is different from what the majority of the previous assistant coaches that have since moved on spoke when teaching players in practice. Something spoken to a player by a coach to a recruit that came from the same general area will be said one way, while a coach from say, the northwest, a Wilcox or Sirmon, will even use differnt words to express the same thing.

Well, we hit rock bottom in hell last season. No, reason why we can't climb out of the depths of hell and win some games this season.

After last season, a change was necessary. I don't see how so many people can want CDD gone and then get mad when the staff is changed, is that not exactly what they wanted (in essence)?

A head coach is more like a CEO than most give them credit for.

A head coach (in football) manages the assistants and logistics and long term vision (is the face of the product). The assistants largely oversee the day to day operations of their corps and are responsible for their improvement, motivation and performance. Yes the CEO is responsible for the overall performance of his organization but he might not actually be in-charge of that area, if that makes sense.

The hardest thing for someone who has never been in a position of leadership to understand is that there is a HUGE difference between being responsible for the end result (like Dooley) and of being in charge of the mechanisms that control the outcome (like the assistants).

Good post. I said something very similar in another forum. :salute:

1) OL strength and run blocking ability - another year - +MJackson and Tiny in the mix this year making guys really step up if they want to keep their job

2) RB play - another year on Lane, more development of Neal, adding talented freshman - see potential for solid play here

3) Coaching - this is DD's first stint being a HC at a big boy program so i think every year he will improve - i also overall the staff changes resulted in an upgrade

4) Kicking Game - not sure it could get worse - another year on both guys who are supposed to have some talent and a new coach might do the trick

5) Ability to rush the passer - I am hopeful having CM and JS coming off the edge standing up and causing a bit more confusion to the opposing OL will give us more of an ability to get to the QB - also having couch as a 3-4 DE in passing situations can help here

6) Ability to stop the run - we bring in a huge DT and a quality 3-4 DE in Sentimore - lose very little in the front 7

7) Ability to make explosive plays on Offense - Bray is healthy, Hunter is health, and CP is added

8) Ability to make explosive special teams plays - Devrin is back and should be more durable - think Pig and others could make an impact

I mentioned 8 b/c I don't think 3 will be enough :) and I think we could be seeing a whole new animal this year in terms fielding a competitive team
