Importance of free throws

We went and got players in the portal and must have known most of them did not have a great record for shooting free throws. Spearman actually doing better than Miami. Spencer always had trouble there. Holingshead already here not very good. Latham couldn't make a high percentage at Syracuse. Whitehorn has always been good from the line. Cooper started the season making them missed three out of 7 yesterday. That certainly hurt, but not as much as her six turnovers. Boyd hasn't shown a lot of skill at the line average at best. Darby never gets fouled. Spear is really good doesn't get there a lot.

Reason next season looks so much better is all the players coming in are deadly free throw shooters. All five are 80 percent or better. LSU is usually terrible and yesterday made 20 of 22.
We can harp on free throws and whatnot... that's not the reason we didn't beat LSU! The reason Tennessee gets beat is because they can't defend small shifty guards, they can't create for themselves offensively, and Tennessee doesn't have a NATURAL POINT GUARD who can make their surroundings better!

They are a year AWAY from being the best in the country.

Said it before ... Spencer needs to take a dribble or two instead of launching as soon as the refs toss her the ball.

LSU went 20 for 22 and we went 13 for 20. The other games most of them anyway teams got to the line way more than we did and ended up making more even if they missed a few.
Lady Vols lost Sunday didn't shoot great
Missed too many free throws ...
They were playing 5 on 8.....if u count
Peck and her wingman 5 on 10
My TV muted after 5 minutes.....

This is a yes and a no. On a miss free throw did we get the rebound and kick it out for a made three or get a two point shot or maybe a made basket and a plus one. With every change comes a change to the game afterwards. So there is no way of knowing if making a shot leads to more or less points.
This!!

While making FT's is very important, you can't just add those misses to our score.

Every once in awhile these things can occur on missed free throws. But most of the time missing free throws are not conducive to winning .

Certainly wasn't the entire reason as there are many areas you could name as the reason. They were plus seven on free throws and won by five and we missed seven so that is certainly a consideration. As you say you let a player go off for 23 points off the bench is a reason as well. You hold her to 15 you win. Nineteen turnovers to their 13, Lost the offensive rebounding by 7. A lot of reason we lost could count any of the shortcomings as a contributor.

It’s obvious
Yes, and thanks to everyone for resisting naming names. There really is no good reason to drag any of our hard-working, loyal young women. The comments and opinions have been publicly aired ad nauseum, and I kinda think we as supporters of the Lady Vols are at our best when we are kind and respectful, NOT when we are "just telling it like we see it."

Sometimes it's best to say nothing. Post like you would about your little sister, with consideration of her feelings. 🥹

A very large portion of postgame comments, including my own, are stating the obvious. So, in any basketball game ever played, a team's chance of winning is enhanced when they make a large percentage of their free throw attempts. The LVs did not and they lost. There were other contributing factors. Hope they do better against Auburn.

Really? 🤔 I hadn't noticed.

Joking aside - and this is not a justification but - I just don't spend time fretting about the free throw problem. It's real, but considering fatigue from the style of play and the need to assemble a competitve roster for this season, I don't intend to fixate on it.

Most of the top teams average 75%. Tennessee's at an abysmal 67%. It is abysmal. No doubt. But UT's gonna have to take things as they come this year. Considering they had to duct tape and epoxy this team together after last season, I just don't care. It'll probably be what sends them home from both the SEC and NCAA tournaments, but, we'll get better. Better shooters coming. More shooters, more bodies, more depth, I think all of those will help on this front. So. Onward and upward.
LSU played way fewer players and missed 2 out of 22, where's the fatigue factor for them I don't buy the fatigue playing a factor. Other teams sub less and should be more fatigued, imo. We're just not a good FT shooting team. Get up more shots.

Does LSU play full court pressure throughout every game? Does Mulkey demand so much from her players on both defense and offense that they have to sub out every 2-3 minutes to maintain their ability to compete?

What the 💩 does that have to do with the fatigue of our players. We sub to much to blame fatigue. We don't shoot FT's well(67%) .

Yep, Arkansas guard scored a lot on us and LSU guard did 1st game and then disappeared for several games until we saw them again and lit us up again. The Amoore girl for UK would be the next small guard we need to stop, she uses the arm bar without calls to a science. She didn't hit a 3 vs Tex & 14 points total in 36 minutes and the team shot 3 of 15 from 3 I believe & 34% overall FGs vs Texas, just killing any UK chance, thus the 20 point loss. If you limit her we can beat UK
