I'm the only one

So basically you are saying, hypothetically of course; that if every player of our team were to be accused of rape and suspended, you would be ok with that? There has to be some due process. I could understand if they both were arrested, but they were accused.

Yeah, I would. Because I don't believe football is as serious as sexual assault. Forgive me for being mature enough and humane enough for having those beliefs.

Same. I would feel much worse if a player was still on the team and playing then was found guilty.

God forbid somebody miss a football game while things get sorted out.

It's not about football, but his life has seriously been turned upside down. If these allegations are false, what recourse does he have. This is about his life. There have been far too many examples of false accusations made against young men by bitter scorned women.

If your daughter came up to you and said a football player assaulted her, would you say to her "he needs to play football until he's found guilty"?

Of course I would. I would even help him put on his pads and stuff. I would tell her to sit down and know her place.

But that's true no matter what. Playing football is the least of his worries.

He can press charges against her and/or sue her.

This is about his life. There have been far too many examples of false accusations made against young men by bitter scorned women.

And those make up a small percentage of all sexual assaults reports. On top of the fact that sexual assault is one of the most underreported crimes. The fact that false claims have occurred does not diminish the need for an appropriate response in light of an investigation. To UT's credit, they have responded appropriately.

The people that need to know, Know. Not much problem figuring it out. However, some fans are immature and would harass her to no end.

The DA and others are probably sitting on this to let it blow over so that it becomes less problematic in weeks to come. If you release her name, she will live in hell no matter what the truth.

Look around and there is no telling what would happen. Surprised it hasn't already. All will know in due time if AJ is charged, but she will probably be gone and return to the area for certain legal events with very few knowing.

Again, this is a mess.

They only believe AJ should play while being investigated...
Winston, Harris, etc. should all be suspended and expelled, however.

I don't get how everyone was like "yo Jameis should be suspended for saying FHRITP" but when our own player is accused of rape, they're like "whoa let's wait until he's officially arrested, pump the brakes"

Havn't seen a single person post proof of such hypocrisy. Get off your high horse and show some proof or be quiet.

I don't understand what I need to prove. Do I need to prove that people thought Jameis should have been suspended? Because there was more than one thread originally dedicated to it, with many people agreeing. As for people saying that AJ should be able to play until arrested (innocent until guilty thing), well like...read just about any thread on the front page. I'm sure you'll see someone say that.

More women are affected more severely by sexual violence and domestic abuse than men by false allegations, and good investigators can extract the truth from these situations.

Not relevant.

No reason we can't have our cake and eat it too. Why can't both the victim and accused be protected?

Sexual violence carries a stigma greater than any other crime outside of terrorism or treason.

I don't see why it isn't possible for the PD to conduct a speedy investigation, and protect the players' identity in the mean time.

Why does it have to be "either/or" for who gets identity protection?

Everyone knew who the players were before the police released a thing because of the suspensions. Nothing would be different if the police redacted the names. We'd know them anyway.

My personal take...

What's to stop anyone from targeting any UT player, and accusing them of any crime, if an accusation gets them suspended?

I mean, if all it takes is an accusation and a police report, then Josh Dobbs better not leave his dorm room, nor let anyone in. Anyone can make a accusation, get the person punished for an amount of time, and then decide not to press charges.

In this case, if AJ really did it, then okay, charge his butt, and have him deal with the punishment, he'll deserve it.

But there's been no charges pressed, and nothing concrete. The "victim" is taking her sweet time deciding on whether or not to press charges, when if he obviously did it, and she's got the courage to make the accusation, then she should have the courage to press the charges, and utilize the justice system that our country is so proud of.

Instead, what's happening, is no charges have been filed, and a good football player, who has been with this program through some of its worst times, and who has been an incredible leader for our program, and who has statistically done well, and who came back for a fourth year to win, is not even going to be able to participate in his Senior day which he came back for, and may not be able to help his team be in a bowl game, which he's never experienced in his career at UT, and the longer it drags out, the more of a hit his draft stock will take, meaning it's costing him money.

Basically, if he did it, then charge him, and he'll be doing the jail time.

But otherwise, why is he being punished based off of an accusation, and what's to stop anyone from accusing anyone who happens to be in the situation?

If anything, the players need to learn to not put themselves in these situations. They don't need to be at parties, or in compromising situations. But when you're at UT, those are hard to avoid unfortunately. And they can't nor should they live in a bubble simply because they're football players.

If it's true, I feel for the young lady, and that is certainly a traumatizing situation. But letting this drag out is hurting everybody. Charges either need to be filed, or the investigation needs to be over. If you talk to people who were there, and you have nothing to show forcible rape, then what is the deal?

I don't know. I just hate it that if A.J. is innocent, after everything he has done and given to the University of Tennessee, that his career is going to end here like this, because of a false accusation.

But once again, if it's true...then he deserves what is coming to him.

There sure are a lot of folks wanting AJ to play football for UT no matter what.
Notice that my original post never said he should play. It merely pointed to the potential issue that could arise from someone not being held publicly accountable to their accusations. For the record I agree with Butch's decision to suspend him. Because if we played him and the accusations were actually proven to be true, then our schools name would be damaged.
Butch did the right thing by putting Tennessee's honor and reputation above all else.
Also the it's getting to the point where several days have passed and no charges have been filed (not to mention her friend, who decided against pressing charges), where i'm starting to doubt the validity of the woman's claims. If she was truly assaulted in this highly disgusting way, you'd think she'd want to press charges immediately.

i can't believe 16 people have clicked "like" to the op's post. That's truly disheartening and honestly a bit scary.

Not hard to see why Tennessee and the South in general is the laughing stock of a country that as a whole is considered a joke by the rest of the developed world.

I think if AJ is innocent, he should be able to sue the accused for damages to his reputation and his career.

If no charges are brought forward, I hope he and his family go after her in a federal civil case so no matter what state she goes to, they can take her property and garnish her wages.

You want to ruin someone's life with some malicious scheme, you better think twice, and a third for good measure.

Just out of curiousity, how would this be made into something the federal courts would hear?
