1992 - Florida 9-4 (10th final poll), lost SEC Title game to eventual champs Bama 28-21
1993 - Florida 11-2 WON SEC Title game 5th in final poll
1994 - Florida 10-2-1 7th in final poll WON SEC Title game
1995 - Florida 12-1 WON SEC Title game lost NC game to Nebraska. 2nd in final poll
1996 - Florida 12-1 WON SEC Title game, WON NC game against FSU.
1999 - Florida 9-4 lost SEC Title game to Bama, 12th in final poll
2000 - Florida 10-3 WON SEC Title game, 10th in final poll.
Point is that the SEC East, for the most part, was the dominant division in that time period. And Florida 90s was like Bama now. And they are down right now after the Muschamp disaster. The only thing that idiot done right was beat Tennessee every time out. This year Florida was still down, Georgia was way down, and the entire rest of the East that we face are walking dumpster fires and we still managed not to get to the title game. Butch Jones will never get it done here. He blew his chance.
Next year he'll have the "we are young" excuse again and "freshman QB" excuses that people will let him get away with. They have a 6-6 floor and a 8-4 ceiling next year. He won't be able to claim progress and all of these charts and stats by the Butch worshippers will have to go in their back pockets, much like a growing portion of the UT fanbase is going into Butch's back pocket.
I've said it time and again and I mean it. I refuse to insult other fans for opinions posted on a message board. I may not understand, or even begin to figure out a way to understand the thought process behind being convinced that Butch Jones is the right guy for the job, but I'm not going to hurl insults the other way just because I believe the complete opposite.
What a lot of people IMO don't understand at all is that many of us who have said all along the guy can't get it done are not negative fans. We WANT UT to be relevant. And I heard it last night described perfectly. Butch Jones is coach OCHO or NUEVE. Mr. 8 or 9 wins. I'm sorry, for a program like UT 8 or 9 wins - in a day and age where we now have 12 games instead of 11 with an added creampuff in there - is not acceptable at UT.
Hire an AD with a backbone (Blackburn) and let him get the right guy in here and fix this. And before you say it I fully understand that there's only one Nick Saban. But Jesus Christ on a Crackerjack there is a laundry list of names that could do better at UT than Butch Jones that would come here in a nanosecond with a competent AD making the hire.
And let me go ahead and get the insults and comebacks out of the way:
Could I do better? No, but again I'm not paid 4 freaking million to be the HFC at one of the best college football schools in America.
He's better than Dooley! - Of course he is. And so is my recently deceased one eyed cat. If all he had to do was be better than Dooley about 1,000 coaches (in Tennessee alone) would have fit that bill.
WHO YA GONNA GIT? Someone that doesn't spout off ridiculous nonsense and can actually coach football. Someone who isn't a gimmick but can go out there and just coach football and win the SEC East every few years and compete for the playoffs twice a decade.
He's IMPROVING every year, I have a chart! - Yes, I realize that the W/L record has improved. Butch Jones is the most tenured coach in the SEC East. In a historically bad period for the East. In a year where Georgia, Missouri, and South Carolina are all ushering in new coaches and trying to rebuild. In a year where Kentucky is still Kentucky and Vandy is still Vandy. In a year where Florida is still trying to get their footing back after the Muschamp disaster. And yet, despite all of that, Butch Jones tripped over his flute once again.
The guy has won ONE game IMO in his entire time at Tennessee where it was an upset win - year two over South Carolina. And he's "blew it" many other times. No, the guy is not on the field making plays. But he is in charge of them and also hiring the right staff to get them to be a top flight team. And he just can't get the job done.
Next year his seat will start out hot. The recruiting is full of 3 star players this year. A down year this year, coupled with a bad team next year and a coach on his way out would equal another bad year of recruiting. So let the new coach come in with a rebuild again or hope that Jones knows his number is up and leaves on his own accord after this season. I'm telling you - next year won't be pretty IMO. And as soon as it goes sideways we are going to have another couple of "lost years" with the next guy until we can really get back to relevance. And this is all Dave Hart's fault. I don't blame Butch Jones for taking the UT job. He's smart enough to be a good carnival barker. And maybe, just maybe he's smart enough to see the writing on the wall and exits stage left so he can sell this same horsecrap to the next place he goes and buys himself another 5 years of relevance before everyone figures out that he was in the MAC for a reason.
