Tennessee is producing more and more top recruits... Trey Smith was the #1 recruit in the nation....Explain why at this moment in time UTK is a top 15 job.
Our facilities are fantastic but so are at least 15 other school's.
Our stadium is storied and imposing but so are at least 15 other school's.
Our fanbase is passionate and love their team but so are at least 15 other fanbases.
Fertile recruiting ground? Way behind in that aspect
No, we did not dodge a bullet. Someone said that they heard from a someone else that GS once enabled that sick guy at PSU, and without any proof, college snowflakes threw a tantrum and now we may owe him a ton of money.
That UT isnt an attractive job anymore... And all the big name coaches turn us down... I see this here and hear it elsewhere and I am sick of it. Butch was the AD's 4th or 5th choice when we hired him... The guy should not have been in our top 20... And Schiano should not have been in our top 100... Our inability to get a good coach is due to our incompetent, lazy, and cheap athletic department, period... There are probably 10 or 20 great coaches and as many or more good coaches... You cant convince me that Currie called all of them and gave his best effort to get them to come to UT.
media driven drivel clickbait...ESPN hates us...and, I don't like them very much either...
GO VOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why are those names unrealistic? Give me a good reason... A week or so ago I saw an article saying UCLA was the worst job in power 5 and they just got the best coach on the market. Money talks and UT can outbid anyone in the country but we wont do it.
But what makes UT undesirable, Mr. Negativity? Media pundits were labeling UCLA as a bad job due to its facilities, location, and competition for recruits with all the other schools in the area. So you are suggesting that Kelly picked UCLA because he wanted the job? Okay, do you not think there is a good coach somewhere who would want the UT job? I mean we just have one of the best traditions in the country, but I guess we are just chopped liver.Obviously Kelly didnt take his job for the money, look at his offer. He picked the job he wanted. Many look at money way too much, especially when were talking about coaches who have already made 10s of millions. Most p5 schools can match any reasonable offer we can.
People acting like we can outbid everyone might be true, but it would have to be in the extreme level, like offering 15-20 million/year, not just 10-20% more. If you double or triple my salary, I might go somewhere I dont really want to, but I sure aint going to do it for 15% more than Im making.
Never expected those guys... It just ticks me off that people try to act like jobs like TCU, Washington, etc. are better than UT. And before Mullen went to Florida, he was supposedly unobtainable too because he loved MSU so durn much.
What does UCLA have that we dont have? What makes that job better than ours??? I just dont see it.
But what if the car dealership down the road has a competitive advantage? Maybe they're willing to sell cars at half price. In this case that competitive advantage that other universities have is the intangibles and perception in coaching circles. Tough to overcome.Yeah. This "They said No" excuse is getting old.
We aren't closing deals. This is sales and negotiation. Imagine a car salesman telling his boss, "No one wanted to buy a car this month" Its ridiculous. Identify your customer, Pitch, and Close! If you can't, someone else will. In our case someone else is the other AD's who are getting great coaches to their programs. Meanwhile, we end up with Butch and Butch 2.0
While I agree with the general sentiment, about 10 names people throw around as a potential coach are not people who would come to Tennessee.
So, the problem is people not willing to accept that realistic options are fewer than they would like.
But, yes, there were realistic options better than Schiano and better than Jones.
But, these Petersen/Patterson fantasies people have are part of the problem

agree, and i'll take it a step further...it's not that you shoot for a Petersen, it's that we view him as a plan b to jon gruden.
when every other program in the country would view him as plan a....with a captial A......
you start there and work your way down to a dan mullen or scott frost, you probably feel pretty good.
when Petersen/patterson are plan b/c guys on your board (as fans), then it's a lot easier to be disappointed when someone says "Dan Mullen/Scott Frost etc...would be a good fit here".
that said, there are very few people here that gave any credance to the Greg Schiano talk. i dismissed it completely when i saw his name being reported.
-Lots of stadiums are full every Saturday100k seat stadium that's full every Saturday. Some of the best facilities in college football period. Great traditions. Plenty of $$ SEC program.
Look I'm not saying we are the prettiest girl in the room and we can choose whoever we like. But excuses are just that in business....excuses! You either deliver or you don't.
My point is Head coaches get fired when they don't deliver wins. If our administration can't deliver a Top Coach, they should get shown the door.
-Lots of stadiums are full every Saturday
-Have good facilities but so does just about everyone else except Florida. Hell look at Oregon.
-Almost every legit college program has great traditions.
-Sure we generate a decent amount of revenue, but UT isn't exactly bursting at the seams with money. There is a reason tuition has doubled (or more?) in the last 10 years.
Bottom line, if you're not winning here as a coach you and your family are under the microscope in Knoxville. Couple that with an AD that is in shambles and an administration who is more concerned with hiring the next big research professor and you can see why we're here. Hell, you could see it in 2012 but most people chose to ignore it. Lastly, please stop comparing the hiring of a top flight football coach to sales. It's a poor comparison.
