I'm kicking the bee's nest clearly

Butch does little to put his players in a position to win. He coaches scared, every game comes down to being a nail biter, playing not to lose instead of putting the foot on the gas and playing to win. By not running the ball to score a touchdown there at the end was inexcusable. Saban would have had his OC's head on a platter in a matter of seconds after that complete waste of an opportunity, and would have done so publicly with deep humiliation involved. Unless he wins out the rest of the way, Butch is most likely done at Tennessee.

This.

Here is my rational criticism of the coaching on the last offensive possession.

We have the ball 1st and goal on the 9 yard line with 58 seconds left in the game, down 3. We have 3 timeouts, they have 2.

After watching college football through the years, it is my conclusion that the absolute best end-of-game defense is to possess the ball on offense. Week after week we see teams respond to a seemingly game winning or tying score with a scoring drive that takes less than 60 seconds.

So in the situation above, what did we do? We threw the ball 3 times, kicked the field goal, and gave the ball back to Florida with 50 seconds on the clock and 2 timeouts. That was entirely inexcusable.

If we run the ball 3 straight times in that situation, worst case scenario by running is we make Florida use both of their timeouts, run 35 seconds off the clock for 3rd down, and are kicking the field go to overtime with about 5-10 seconds left on the clock. That's even if Kelly gets zero yards on every carry. There is also a substantial chance he is able to score a TD on one of those 3 carries, and we give the ball back with a lead and likely less time on the clock and timeouts for Florida.

This lack of planning is squarely on the coaching staff. Execution beyond simple center snap and hand off exchanges are taken entirely out of the equation. You simply can't give the ball back to the other side with that much time left on the clock.

So true. Butch cannot manage the game in real time. He needs to appoint someone who can and apologize for failing the team and fans. If only..

(serious question) Not trying to kick the bee's nest here, but in all these threads folks blame Butch. That was a scrappy play, a fluke, to me. I thought they did a great job getting us in as position to win. What would you have Butch do differently?

The only thing I could see was taking a time out instead of putting in JG. He was clearly not ready for that situation and made the line jump.

Scott made good/bad calls, Shoop made some bad/good ones. What did Butch do specifically that has y'all buying his moving truck?

And before you say it, yep I'm tired of mediocrity too. I'm just trying to understand what you're getting at specifically.

He has proven over and over he is not a very good coach. Saturday was another example.

I get so tired of this question...."What would you have Butch do differently?" or having to point out all the bad coaching calls....you want to know why I put this all at the feet of Jones?

First and goal inside the one....shotgun snap. Should have gone under center and handed it off 3 times....instead shotgun snap in loud stadium, false start, pass, pass INT.

Third and inches in FG range...shotgun snap, pass, holding call, 10 yards back, sack, missed 51 yard FG by a freshman. Should have handed off...made it, first down, missed it, easier FG.

First and goal at end of game. 1 minute left. RB with 141 yards rushing. two timeouts in our pocket. Play calling? Pass, pass, pass, FG. Tied game. Left 50 seconds on the clock for UF. One or two runs and we either score a TD or kick a FG with no time on the clock. Instead, UF bomb wins game when a good time manager would have had us kick a FG on last play or had a TD. Incomplete passes and end of game time management.

Those are all coaching errors. I knew it live...no 20/20 hindsight...I was screaming at my TV while it was going on...

same here unless we score on the first play, there should have been 30 secs max left on the clock.

Amen...people say that if we ran three times and ended with a FG then we would complain that he played it safe and didn't play to win....

...let me tell you, there is a thing called playing smart. Looking at all the variables and determining the best case and worst case scenario. Looking at the time, the way we were running the ball, the number of timeouts UF had, Butch needed to look at all the variables and make the wise decision. How do I score and make sure UF does not have the opportunity to score after me?

Butch did NOT look at the entire situation and all the variables. No way do you do that. Every coach out there (except Butch) at least runs in once or possibly twice to make sure he has it last...

A CEO for a company has to look at more than just sales...he/she has to look at sales, expenses, forecasts, stocks, marketing, employees, etc. prior to agreeing to a path of action. The CEO usually calls on their Exec VPs, Sr. VPs, advisors, etc. to gain knowledge and input regarding the different facets that could impact the outcome of their decision.

Our CEO did not take in the entire picture. Heck, burn a TO to talk to the other coaches and get a game plan together. Seek council and discussion with the staff you hired. We had three....burn one to put a game plan together for the next 3 plays.

Agree on running at the one. After that there was a dropped touchdown pass. Coaches put players in position to score.

That's totally a hindsight situation

Playing for the win and get another dropped touchdown pass... running it to use clock is hindsight when you're trying to go for the win right there

Those aren't coaching errors

Butch had conducted a five year study in the MAC. Never running the ball inside the 10 yard line was determined to be the highest percentage play. The man was just following the charts.

BS, you're totally looking at that in hindsight, there was a touchdown pass dropped. If we ran it three times then lost in overtime you'd all be complaining we should have gone for the win on that last drive.

First time poster here....I know I picked a great time to join in! Went back and watched second half again this AM. Call me crazy, but I thought and still think it was a decent called game from CLS/CBJ. Yeah I know, JK should have had more touches in red zone/goal line. Fact of the matter is, QD checked out of run to throw dbl covered fade, JK drops a sure TD, Palmer drops a sure TD, FGs were missed, costly penalties occurred, etc. And imo the last play didn't necessarily warrant a prevent D bc they had a timeout and 9 sec to get into field goal range which prevent would have surely given them. Yes I acknowledge a few play calls that could have been better, but shore up red zone O and we can compete with anyone. The D was what I was worried most about and they actually played with some attitude.

That's what I saw as well. It stings because it's uf again and all the whatifs that go with it, but the team played a good game overall.

Well first off, it's not just today. What happened today fits a pattern of what we've been seeing since 2013. However since you asked, how about actually handing the ball to your beast of a running back when you're inside your opponent's 10 yard line. How about on third and a half a yard, lining up under center. How about not throwing fade routes on the goal line. How about in the final minute of the game, using the clock to your advantage. How about tailoring the offense to suit the talent that you have.

Exactly right. It's an obvious pattern with this guy concerning offense situations. There is no indication he'll change. He needs to go. He will not take us to the next level

But if they did run it up the middle and got denied. Everyone would be saying "the offence is so predictable"
The point is they made the call and it was the wrong one this time. It might be the right call next time. And if we had scored instead everybody would be calling him a genius.

When you have a 1st and goal from the half yard line you run it in. If you can't pick up half a yard in 4 tries you don't deserve to win.

Just another one of you who can't define exactly what was so bad and back it up, so you resort to being smart asses

Did you watch it?

If you did your questions are ridiculous. Florida is not as good as Tennessee and the Vols should have won by 14 points or more.

Yea I watched the game.
You still have presented no solid basis for bashing the coaches. The pass at the one was bad, name another call that was irrefutably a horrible decision by the coaches.

You must be related to Butch...just give it a rest dude. The ineptitude of the staff is blatantly obvious to everyone.

Wow 14 points, that happens to equal the points we could have scored by catching passes in the end zone plus or minus fgs, etc

Butch is 1-4 versus the worst 5 Florida Gator football teams we've played in my lifetime.

He invented new ways to lose in 3 of the 4 losses.

Give it a rest? Someone has to think objectively on here. How bout staying positive til the end of the season instead of calling for coaches to be fired after one questionable play call. Yes one. The rest are for Monday morning quarterbacks and were not horrific coaching decisions.
