I finally got to sit down and analyze the spring game. We definitely have some playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. The question now is can we consistently get them the ball in space. Based on my analysis, Bailey will be the starter come September. Our offense will not be boring to watch, and there shouldn't be any more of those two short runs, a four yard pass, and a punt drives this upcoming season.
Our weak link is definitely going to be the defense though. It is going to take a lot of coaching up between now and September to make our defense minimally respectable.
One advantage we will have is Heupel's tempo. Our guys will be in shape, and the opposing defense will have to be very deep to not get gassed by the 4th quarter. I'm not totally convinced we will reach better than a 6-6 record, but I don't think 4-8 is a realistic record this season anymore. It is going to be hard for SEC defenses to really prepare for our quick tempo. If we can keep our drives alive and disallow defensive substitutions, some SEC defensive coaches will be pulling their hair out by the end of the game. As always, the benchmark will be how we do against the big three. Will we close that gap, and make the games competitive?
