Never thought I'd say it, but I've been slowly warming up to the idea for the past few weeks, and yesterday while playing poker out at Cherokee, I suddenly found myself not only comfortable with the idea, but embracing it. Johnny Majors stamp of approval is the final tipping stone for me. Bring Lane back!
Kiffin loves Tennessee! I know it seems crazy and completely irrational, but I can derive no other conclusion from his comments over the past several years and his obsessive tweeting. Tennessee was the girlfriend he screwed up with and he's regretted those mistakes for the past decade. Aside from the Tennessee alums, I don't think there is any coach that loves Tennessee as much as Kiffin does. So many coaches get to Knoxville, they talk about how much they love it, and then they change their mind when things go wrong. Lane is not that guy. He was hated by Tennessee fans for years and he still LOVES Tennessee! He wants this job more than any other human being out there.
When Johnny Majors talks, you listen. Johnny Majors knows coaching talent. You can make a legit argument that Johnny Majors was better at hiring and firing coaches than any human being who has ever coached college football. Johnny revived Tennessee football primarily by making great coaching hires. And the list of guys he brought in to Knoxville is nearly insane. If Johnny says Lane will win big and is implying that he wants Kiffin back, I have to listen. There's no one I trust more when it comes to evaluating coaches. Listen to Johnny, VolNation.
Wants to beat the crap out of Nick Saban. There is no one out there who wants to beat Nick Saban more badly than Lane Kiffin. None. Kiffin will be completely obsessed with it.
Kiffin has that Steve Spurrier competitiveness. It's strange to me how many coaches out there are not hyper-competitive, but a lot of them love teaching. Nothing wrong with that, but I really want a guy with an insane competitive drive. Steve Spurrier had that. Lane Kiffin has that.
He's a much better coach than he was in 2009. Lane's sole season in Tennessee wasn't bad but it wasn't great. His time at USC was a disappointment, but he was also dealing with major scholarship restrictions. He was more or less set up to fail. This season, Kiffin looks like the coach we wanted back in 2008. He's gone from last to first in A SINGLE SEASON at FAU. He took a team that finished 2-6 in Conference USA last season and went 8-0 with them this season and they've gotten better as the year has gone on. Kiffin has learned from Nick Saban. And remember, he's only 42 years old. He was very very young for a Head Coach when we hired in 2008.
He may be the only coach that can make us competitive. Alabama is an unstoppable powerhouse. Georgia is looking more like Alabama now under Kirby Smart. Florida just hired Dan Mullen who will not fail in the same way that Jim McElwain did. We're surrounded by monsters! We missed our golden opportunities to win the East while it was down; Florida and Georgia are no longer "down." Unless we can land Scott Frost, I'm not confident that there's anyone out there who can make Tennessee #1 in the SEC East again other than Lane Kiffin. Mike Leach is a great coach, but would he win the East? Venables is a great DC, but could he beat Smart, Mullen, and Saban? Norvell is good, but he'd be the 3rd best coach in the SEC East. I love Tee Martin and he should've been our "fallback option" (not Greg F#$%ing Schiano!), but he's never been a Head Coach before and he might struggle like Kiffin did 8 years ago. Kiffin is the one guy out there who would not only embrace the situation, but thrive in it. He could win the East.
He's a great salesman and he's different. In a world where most coaches say the same things, Kiffin is completely different. He has made Twitter a major recruiting platform. He could land #1 classes. What Kiffin is doing on social media is unlike any other coach out there.
Can we forgive him? It's taken me nearly 8 years and maybe we're just the naive girlfriend who thinks "he's changed", but I honestly do think he's changed. And he's much better now than he when we hired him in 2008. This was the Lane Kiffin we were hoping to get back in '08. He's available in 2017.
I still can't believe I'm saying it, but I'm ready for Kiffin to return. We made a mistake hiring him in 2008. We'd be making a mistake not to strongly consider him in 2017. Let's bring Joey Freshwater back to Knoxville!
