Call me crazy. However, my mother and both of her brothers went to MSU, one of them played baseball there, and my grandfather was a professor there. I've got deep roots in Starkville.
However, my parents met at TN when doing masters work and I was raised in Knoxville. I wasn't able to attend TN but have always been a HUGE Vols fan.
I would say that I am 50/50 in my allegiance to each team, though I've always had more exposure to TN by living in Knoxville until a few years ago. My policy has always been to pull for whichever team has the most to gain when they play each other.
For instance, when they played in the SEC Championship game in 1998, I of course pulled for TN because they had the most to gain by being able to, and thus eventually, winning the National Championship. In 2009 in basketball, they met in the SEC Championship and TN was a lock for the NCAA tourney, but MSU had to win the tournament to get the automatic bid. I pulled for MSU, and they won and both of my teams made it to the tourney.
This year, MSU is 5-0 coming in to this game, but I would be crazy to say that they had more to lose if they did not win this game. As I see it, TN's future is on the line. If TN loses, there's a really good chance Dooley won't be able to stick around, and thus, we'll be set back a couple of years at least. I'm pulling for and picking my Vols tomorrow. I want to see a good game, but I think TN pulls away at the end and wins 28-17. Go Bulldogs! Go Vols! Man, I love football.
