Not to mention the fact that you get assistance easier if you are a single mom. Our government is actively working against two parent homes, especially among our poorest families.

hard to find a girl when you're living with your parents (I believe it's close to 20% now). Can't really blame the women on that

A major argument for government mandated free provision of contraceptives is that it reduces the societal cost of unwanted pregnancies. Use the argument for suggesting the government should encourage childbirth to married couples and you are a right wing zealot legislating morality even though the same societal costs apply.

This is why I'm for the government staying out of both.

You could give out free condoms all you want... some of these fools still wouldn't use them. They got money for weed, smokes, beer, etc, but no money for rubbers? Yeah, right.

There is little to no risk for a single mom these days and certainly no shame. In some regards, being a single non-working mom of 5 or 6 kids 6-16 could be considered a pretty good gig. The assistance you get is enough to allow you to lead a better life style than if you were working minimum wage, plus with kids in school all day you have more than enough time to pursue your hobbies. As soon as you get married that all ends, so why get married? As soon as you get a job, that all ends, so why get a job?

What do the kids think about all of this? Hard to say for sure, but we have a day care in our high school that has a waiting list.

Also, I know a kid who at 13-14 years old had 7 adult women sexual partners. They bought him supplements called things like "The Big Bamboo" and convinced him to not use condoms.

My wife's ex lives with his parents and has for the last 2 years. He's nearly 40. With 2 college degrees.

I know it's just a term of art, but I've always been a litlle put off by the term "illegitimate" to describe someone who had no say in the circumstances to which he is born.

In my view that is part of the problem. In short, we've removed the idea of shame from a lot of circumstances that may very well be shameful.

It is interesting to read The Scarlett Letter with our inner city middle school kids--they don't understand the issue at all.

Now, I'm not saying that all single parentage is shameful. Certainly, breaking away from an abusive spouse and raising your kids on your own should be applauded and encouraged. But, I'm not convinced teen agers having kids so they can collect assistance should be anything but shameful.

To the teen, okay. But to the kid? Seems misdirected and harsh to me.

Sure, not the kids fault, but hard to have one without the other.

But, people used to think it shameful to go outside in their pajamas, now they will board an international flight in them. Alas.

I was on a project several years ago working with a single black woman with several children. She told me that any black woman (yes LG, I know you will point out how racist that is) that had children with a black man and expected him to be around to help raise them was a fool. She thought it was a genetic trait that went back to Africa when young men were expected to go from village to village impregnating as many females as possible.

I didn't attempt to verify that little snippet of information.

Everything goes back to either africa or slavery. It never starts with personal accountability. She chose to spread her legs with a man that she readily admits is more than likely to leave her. So why put herself in that position and bring a child in this world?
