I'll lay the blame elsewhere...

Yes. Tennessee got a bad call at the end of that game. Hands down. But, Heupel needs to learn to win by playing the safe game sometimes. We should have kicked the field goal. We had been stopped on numerous short yardage situations. Bad decision. Then, on the last drive use some timeouts. Give yourself some more time and scheme up something to get you into field goal range. This was squarely on Heupel and staff. They're a really good coaching staff, but this shouldn't have been close in the 4th. Oh well. Good season...impressed...but we need a little more "safe" at the end of the games.

Let's extend this a bit more....

6 PI calls vs. 1
Holding on Tillman when he had a sure TD at end of game--no call
Purdue TE TD--> if our call was forward progress was stopped, how was his not?

This was much more than the one call in OT....much, much more.

I love those people who say it’s not the officiating, we had our chances. Of course we did. We also had more than one of those chances affected by poor officiating. This is one game where the refs affected the outcome greatly.

I remember when people used to complain about Butch Jones being too conservative saying he needed to be more aggressive in late game situations.

From 56 yards because the last couple of plays and timing in regulation we’re mishandled. That’s the point being made.

Those plays produced a wide open receiver twice but we failed to execute. We execute there and we are inside the 10, if not in the end zone.

And if you don’t execute you have a 56 yard FG. Ainge just said Hooker made the wrong read on the 2nd deep ball, even though the guy was open. You’re using the potential outcome of the play after seeing it play out, to say it was the right call out of the huddle. I don’t know if Hooker took the wrong read or if that was the targeted play the whole way, but less than a handful of coaches would say 2 - 40 yard passes at the end of a game when a FG wins it, is the right call. Had Heupel managed the clock better several plays back we could’ve mixed a few runs in there as well and it was obvious they couldn’t stop the run in the 4th quarter. We had 3 TO to start that last drive and let 11 seconds and 14 seconds run off the clock on two separate plays. I know he thinks the rhythm and hurry is more important than scheming up a play with time but I’ll disagree.

Heupel not to blame. If they call it a TD everyone is talking about how ballsy he is for going for six. He knew we could get in and we did. You guys bit€# on here about the play calling. We’re limited to what we can do because of talent, depth , etc. if you don’t like him go cheer for someone else

There's absolutely no guarantee any play we ran there would have produced a better result. The sad thing about the last two plays was Hyatt was wide open and walks in for a touchdown if Hooker looked his way.

I'll say what I've said all year when people are questioning the play calls/time management, we scored over 50 in this game, and now set the record for most points we've ever scored in a season. I'm pretty happy we have him as the guy making decisions on offense and not our fans.

The end of half situations people complained about produced points in one situation, we missed a 30 something yard fg in another and last night it should have produced a touchdown with better execution or a 41yd fg attempt if the ref actually calls the massive pass interference correctly.

I’m glad to have him too and you’re right there’s no guarantee either way. But that’s hindsight, again. IMO and I’d wager a lot of coaches as well, play with the FG still being an option; not strictly play for the FG. We basically played strictly for a TD and it cost us an opportunity at a FG, officiating aside which was atrocious all night on myriad of plays.

The end of regulation was his worst moment, by far. The team was moving the ball in chunks and still had timeouts. We only needed one more 10 yd play to get into decent FG range and 20 yards would’ve put us in a very good spot. Instead, he takes 2 deep shots?

Made no sense at all.

Booker took two deep shots, not Heupel. One of those deep shots would’ve put us in field goal range if the officials call the blatant hold on Tillman.
