Ya know, at the beginning of the season, I had high expectations for this team. I was so excited to see how our team would develop this 2016-2017 season. 3 years being on Volnation, I don't think I've ever seen a fanbase such as ours, make me so sick to my stomach. We were coming into this Bama game outmatched, too many injuries, and not mentally prepared to win this game. I've seen probably over 100 posts bashing the players, bashing the coaching staff, and the program in general. It's sad because there's actually some folks on here to have a great conversation about football but it's getting overun by trolls and posters who just want to find every little negative thing to say about our football program. I'm honestly tired of it and having to put up with it. Butch isn't perfect and he'll never be Nick Saban but he's tried to bring this program back to prominence. He truly does care about this program and that's more you can say about Dooley and Kiffin. I'm not giving up on this team after this game. I'm not going to call for the coaching staff's head or start "Fire Butch!" threads. I'm going to continue to support my team win or lose. We still have a chance to win the East. The season ISN'T over yet. There's still more football to be played. You have to stop overlooking the positives and lay off the negatives every once in a while cause if you do that, you're going to be living a miserable life. Like I said, go on and start making jokes about me and this thread but it's not going to change the fact that our fanbase is really embarrassing right now. I really thought we was better than this but I guess I was wrong. I understand being frustrated. Hell I even get frustrated with this team at times but there's no reason why we should be making fun of our players and hoping that they fail the rest of the season all because we were outmatched against a possible National Championship squad. There's not much Butch could have done today. I'm sorry but it is what it is. Flame away guys.
Great thread.
Almost all other fan bases and forums are just about as bad as ours though.
I've lurked for years but hardly ever have time to post. I noticed a few very knowledgeable posters on volnation that actually post very quality content, so i decided to register here. It does get annoying having to sift through tons of garbage posts to read the gems though.
The ignore button can't keep up with it all.
I started following UT in the late 80's so I remember the fan bases adoration with J. Majors after his rebuild started becoming successful, which turned into exasperation after his inability to beat Alabama. As I perceived it, J. Majors didn't lose the approval of the fan base until after the 91 Alabama loss when he complained about Alabama being on our yearly schedule. True Vols didn't turn on him for losing, they turned on him for his unwilingness to face the fight so to speak.
Then Phillip Fulmer was the savior. ..., after Casey Clausen the fans complaints were he never could coach and he was only successfull because he got lucky with Shuler, Manning, Martin, and Clausen . . . Then as Fulmer did lose control of the program we succumbed into the 10 odd year pit of despair known as "The Wilderness".
Let's remember when we hired Butch, as with Dooley, no reputable HC of note wanted the job. You rebuild an old engine if it isn't broken, if the engines broken you can't rebuild it, you have to replace the broken engine. Our program was broken before Butch arrived. We had lost to Vanderbilt and Kentucky in the same frigging year under Dooley. If you don't know how long it had been since we had hit those lows and your presently complaining about our present Vols; then your not a true Vol and you need to go look that up. Butch resurrected a broken program.
We now find ourselves on the precipice of success we haven't experienced since the pinnacle of Phillip Fulmer's tenure.
I would be more irritated by the game thread if I didn't know all the posts where pretty much the same as every other team's forums. Same people blaming Debord & Butch's play calling for 3 and out when we run on 1st & 2nd down have the exact same critique the next series after a 3 and out when we pass on 1st & 2nd down. A bunch of "our coaches are worthless, anybody can do better than this vanilla play calling" vitriol.
I truly wonder if any of these type posters have ever actually played football on a team and understand the intricacies of offensive line cohesiveness. News flash. Peyton Manning is a business man and he was attending on business. He can't say "they're gonna get beat like ragdolls, because when Dobbs gets hit simultaneous from both sides as he tries to get set on a 3 step drop play-action pass; then his receivers don't have time to get down the field and create separation" that would alienate the heart and soul of his fan base and the sheep might order Dominoes instead of his brand. So he says "they need to attack and complete passes down the field". Duh. .., the 'what' is pretty easy to ascertain. The 'How' Peyton had no better idea how to accomplish with a make shift line against the best team and D-line in the nation than myself, Butch, DeBord, or anyone else on Volnation.
I kinda think the vitriol every team's coaches and players now endure, particularly on message boards, is a by product of the rise in popularity of both Fantasy Football, and Madden/EA college football video games. I guess it's good for the sport as a whole as it has increased the popularity of football as a whole. My personal theory is allot of egocentric wanna be sabermetric guruism is a byproduct of those. People experience success and enjoyment with facsimile strategy football representations picking matchups in fantasy football and calling plays on their xbox. It's the equivalent of playing checkers and then criticizing a chess players strategy. Then we get knuckle heads like DOB_Heisman (my first of many ignores) inundating the forums with asinine rhetoric and strategy.
Butch is the man! Thank Butch for fixing our broken program. It's a shame we got waxed by the best team in the country with a plethora of our starters and future NFL'ers injured. I won't try and explain how hard it is to actually roll a pocket with hobbled and back up linemen to someone that has never played football. To those football fans actually in the know. ... yikes! Our tackles are getting killed on the edge so let's try and play into another bamma strength with their closing speed and try to pull our guards outside the pocket. Nah... I think we're better off with Dobbs still alive if barely after the game.
So the fickle fans can continue to critique our coaches all they want and cry about Butch not having won his 3rd consecutive NC yet.
Even after having just endured a demoralizing loss, I'm stoked about where we are. We're still at the precipice of success not seen since before "the wilderness". Butch won me over as a fan before this season when he addressed the need to make our bamma matchup relevant again. Butch is facing the fight. I'm praying we get a bamma rematch fully healthy 10-2 in the SECCG. I bet Butch won't complain about having to play bamma either.
