I think Kiffin's a fine candidate. However, there's no reason to rush the process to beat Clemson to him. There are a number of guys out there who would do just as good a job.
You said you wanted a guy that has been a head coach but you don't know about Patterson and you like Venables?
Contradictory, yes, I know. I would RATHER have a guy who's been a hbc somewhere, but between those 2 I'd take Venables all day long. Patterson has been at TCU for about 8 years and is still there. You'd think if he were that great someone else would have snatched him up by now.
Patterson and TCU took Conference USA by storm 8 years ago. I believe that they won the CUSA championship their first two years in the league. The next year they moved to the Mountain West (a much more competitive conference top to bottom) and won that. They have been in the top half of the conference since. Here is his bio:

While Patterson recruits in the talent-rich state of Texas, he must go toe-to-toe with the likes of BCS schools: Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Arkansas as well as with the top BCS schools for elite recruits.
I said many months ago that Gary Patterson would be a great fit for Tennessee. I hope he gets the opportunity to interview for the job.

You'd say no to Nick Saban?
