Let me say before I begin, Go Dooley and GBO!! and now... I dont seem to recall a lot of negativity towards Majors on this site, but see a lot towards Fulmer. Through 16 yrs, Majors only had 2 seasons of 10+ wins, Fulmer through 16 yrs had 9 seasons of 10+ wins, not to mention a NC. I know the last few years we seemed to be slipping, but could Fulmer have righted the ship?? Could he have been another Joe Paterno? How much better or worse would we be if Fulmer was still here? I was ready for him to go, but seeing the trouble weve been through, I really believe he could have had a couple of 6-6 yrs and fixed things quicker than were going to be able to now. Let the bashing begin.

There is no way Fulmer could have stayed here with all of the vocal resentment of his old fashioned ways. He probably could have eventually righted the ship but it would have been complete hell these past 2 seasons if we were still 6-6 and no changes were made.

Totally agree. If there was a way to eliminate all the negativity around the program, and let everyone including recruits know that he was here to stay, things might have been different.

No.

Consider what happened after his bad season in 2002. We were mediocre for awhile, then had a bigger mess in 2005. More mediocrity, then a bigger mess still in 2008.

You're ignoring how he was already allowed to attempt it multiple times and repeatedly failed.

The 05 season was the first actual meltdown there was mediocrity throughout his tenure but he always bounced back even after 05 he bounced back but it was already too late when the 08 season happened for him to get another chance.

He never bounced back following 2005. The next two seasons were good only in reference to how horrible 2005 was. And it's not like anything changed. We didn't bring in some swarm of superstar players. Fulmer fired one incompetent coach and replaced him with a competent, but not great one. He also fired our crappy OL coach and replaced him with another crappy OL coach.

And I'd consider 2002 a meltdown. We were very highly ranked to start the season and finished unranked. Also, the first season to include losses to UGA, Bama, and Florida. That was supposed to be the year we took over the SEC. Instead, we got absolutely drilled in three of our most important SEC games. The bowl loss was also one of the worst in school history.

You have to admit, it was time for a change. Fulmer's ways just weren't working anymore. He was a great coach and will be the greatest coach in UT history (besides General Neyland). I really like Dooley. He brings back southern roots and he has all the tools necessary to mold us into a championship caliber team. Go Vols!:dance2:

I would consider an SECCG appearance in 07 a bounce back even though we didnt win but we already discussed how we backdoored our way in so i'm not going to argue that. If you win more games than you lost the year before that is a bounce back to me but i understand that those years are still not up to UT standards.

I was one ready for change. I guess my point is, better be careful what we wish for. I still, deep down, believe over time he would have fixed things. I dont really know why, but its easy to say now.

Majors was fired after winning 2 Conference Championships and attending 3 BCS Bowls in his last 3 3/4 years.

Fulmer was fired after winning 0 Conference Championships and attending 0 BCS Bowls in his last 10 years.

2003 and 2004 weren't bad, a definite improvement over 2002. We were never able to match that level of play after the 2005 abomination, however. So I don't think we bounced back. The post-2005 improvement was the equivalent of a dead body bouncing after the impact of a fall from my roof.

A devastating left hook...

People were saying this after 2002. Then again after 2005. It just wasn't happening. Now that Saban and Meyer are entrenched, the odds are lower than ever.

I dont buy into the "backdooring" theory. The games are played and the results are what they are.

The games aren't played the same. You give Florida Tennessee's SEC West schedule and they are in the SEC Championship game. And... they win it.

I think Fulmer was a great HC, he won a NC, a few SEC titles. If memory serves we we going to the SECCG every four years or so. That said, when Coach Cut left, it was pretty much over. The Wyoming game, the players quit, I've never seen anything like it before from a UT squad. When a team quits like that the Coach has lost them. The Clawson thing didn't help matters. I don't think the players bought into what CDC was trying to do, I'm not sure the rest of the staff did either. Another year of that wasn't gonna get it done.

As for him fixing it faster, I guess we'll have to wait and see what CDD can do. GBO!

So did we have to win the SECCG appearances in 04 and 07 to be considered a bounce back?
