If you could pick just one team to beat in football this year...

I'm old enough to painfully remember the second 'bama streak, particularly the '90 loss and '93 tie games that were just abominable.

However, Florida is still at the top of my list. We can win every game, including 'bama, but if we don't beat Florida most likely we don't play for a championship. Only twice since '92 has the loser of the Tennessee - Florida game made an appearance in the SECCG ('92 and '97).

Championships define success. We HAVE to beat Florida to have a season that will go down in history as a success, that is easily the most important game of the year, regardless of our history with 'bama.

i think you are stupid if the alabama game is the one you picked

I think you have no sense of history whatsoever if you think anybody is stupid for picking Alabama . . . besides . . . calling people stupid is flaming . . . and flaming is bad . . . mmmmmkayyy?

This depends on what is more important to you as a fan:
1) To go to the SECCG: UT needs to Beat Florida
2) To say that UT still owns Bama: Then beat Bama

There's been a whole lot of flaming around here lately. Must be an offseason thing I guees.:ermm: (slow period)

ok, it would be stupid to pick them in my opinion as a sure victory because the florida game is much more important in our whole season success. now, if we are talking about which team we truly just want to beat, alabama is probably the majority

And yet it would be stupid to pick alabama as the team to beat? Wow. I'm guessing you aren't a Harvard alumnus.

I really want to beat this guy's a**.

What's interesting to me is the one word that's conspicuously missing from this thread: Georgia.

Old-timers like me want to beat Alabama the most (hello to the "you are stupid" guy); the kids these days want to beat Florida the most. But not one person has mentioned the team that, rationally speaking, maybe ought to be our biggest rival.

UF has such a demographic advantage that, given good-to-excellent coaching, they should be the perennial team to beat in the East. They currently have good-to-excellent coaching. Therefore, whoever wins the UT-UGA game on a consistent basis should be a good position to win the SEC East every few years. If you're the weak sister in that rivalry, however, then you're in the position UGA was during the 90s -- good teams, good players, but never any better than 3rd in the division, and therefore a bunch of bowl games in Atlanta and Tampa. Reasserting ourselves over UGA is critical if we're going to reestablish our program at the level at which we all think it should be.

I'm not arguing that beating UGA is more important than beating UF, or more emotionally satisfying than beating UAT. I'm just surprised that I haven't seen them mentioned much in the thread.

Edit: okay, they were mentioned once or twice, but not as prominently as I would have thought.

It's Florida for me. Although a loss to S.C. or another lower tier team would probably hurt more...

i am saying that a lot of people would get the most satisfaction out of beating bama. but now, our most important game is by far florida. do you see what i'm sayin or should i just stop talking about it? :)

I want to say Arkansas. Last years game in Fayetville was a joke. I was born in the North West Arkansas area and live in Central Arkansas. They beat our butts and I want us to do the same to them. I was in the stands when the team came on the field and you could tell they did lost their swagger from the last minute loss the week before. I spent the entire time shaking my head as they ran up the score on us. I know they are not our rivalry, but I would like the win.

I can't believe that nobody's said it yet, but the thought of losing to South Cack-a-lacky and the Head Cock makes we want to jump off the upper deck of Neyland. Vandy is right there, too.

Don't get me wrong, and I'm with Vercing... on the Alabama and the "decade of futility" issue. And, I HATE FLORIDA. But, the loss to the Dorks in '05 and Spurrier in general make me physically ill.

How 'bout this? Let's just win 'em all.

that's why the topic is "If you could pick just one team to beat in football this year..."

Most of us have been watching UT fball for a long time and UF will never be the rival the bama is/was. Bama actually fielded a competitive team prior to the 1990's.

Aww, has South Carolina finally made the quantum leap to the middle tier?

I believe they passed UK last season.

The problem isn't my comprehension. It is you calling others stupid.
