If you are saying “we should have broke the bank and got a better coach”

Blows my mind nobody understands this. The guys most of our fans wanted get to pick and choose what best suits their career. Coming into this situation at Tennessee is not a smart career choice.

You and I understand it, so that’s a good enough start. 😁

The money will always be out there for elite coaches, so at the end of the day it’s more about the fit than the money.

No, it sounds like the guys most of our fan base wanted were not even reached out to (Freeze, Kiffin, Campbell)

Apparently $ won't get a high profile coach to come into a toxic program and fix it. What a lot of fans don't get is that high profile coaches like what everyone wants don't need the $. That's not a motivator for them, its what program can I win championships and look great. Right now TN is not that place. None of these type guys were ever coming. Even the lower good P5 coaches wouldn't touch TN. Yes Freeze would have but he was not on candidate list, per UT Admin, so he doesn't matter.

Looks like someone else understands.

what a lot of fans need to get is that Tennessee will not be back in a good position until they convince one of those high profile guys to come here. The last 4 hires proved that.

You have to come in guns blazing in the SEC. You have to be the best.

Which is exactly why Campbell, Fickell, Franklin wouldn't even consider one of the best jobs in the country with Texas.

Again: if Texas and even Auburn aren't getting their pick of the litter... it should be clear to us that we won't either.

The guys that most fans wanted werent even talked to. It never was about money.

Perhaps, but the topic of this thread was about the money, hence my responses.

I’m not qualified to know who UT did or didn’t contact. But it’s difficult to fathom there weren’t at least multiple back channel calls made to agents to gauge interest before going through the interview process.

$4 million/year sure isn't.

Well the topic of the thread is that money cant get you a coach. I'm a firm believe it can if you talk to the right coach. But we had our hands tied to a degree.

And I’m a firm believer the “right” coach won’t be swayed by money alone.

Does anyone know how much of the current issues are they required to tell a HC candidate?

How much do you tell the potential head coach and when? Think about how that essentially gives everyone one of those coaches a major chip against you in the recruting and transfer market right now. Yes the NCAA stuff will eventually come home to roost, but until that happens the only people that can tell a recruit that they "know" what is happening at Rocky Top is those that the AD has laid it all out to.

I saw the same issue with the LSU DC search and their boiling Title IX mess. Too many names that said thanks but no thanks early and then many names dropping out as "lack of fit".

The risk/reward side of something like this fascinates me.

Be realistic. James Franklin @ 8+ million/year + staff??? Maybe 10+ due to NCAA? Do y'all really understand he was about ran out of Penn State on a rail this year? He was 4-5 in Big 10 play with wins over 2-5 Michigan, 3-6 Rutgers, 2-5 Michigan State and 2-6 Illinois. It would be malfeasance to back the truck up to this guy. Granted that a name such as Huepel being hired doesn't transition into mass celebration. I know for a fact (be honest) the majority of you here and I would have been delighted if we were told Tennessee could fire Pruitt without any buy out and get Huepel a month ago.

We could afford to outpay Nick Saban if we actually wanted to. Whatever our "top tier" offer was, it wasn't enough. If they say no then keep upping the offer until they say yes. No excuses.

Big name coaches don't do lateral moves. Unless it's a Jimbo Fisher scenario where he's unhappy or maybe something like Kiffin going to a "dream job" at USC, it's rare.

The medium and small programs can now pay their coaches more money with all the tv contract money. That's given a lot more leverage to those HC that are making 2-4 mill at their current jobs and aren't in a hurry to jump to a big football program. They're content to wait for a good opportunity instead of walking into a less than ideal scenario just for the bump in pay.

It’s not what you can afford, it’s the perceived value of what you’re selling.

Not to mention Bama would match if not beat whatever offer UT put out there.

I get that. Bama would outbid us for their coach, but almost no one else would. If we really wanted to knock, say, Matt Campbell's socks off, we easily could.

Matt Campbell knows he’s worth more long term walking into a better situation elsewhere than going to UT right now.

UT isn’t the right fit for Campbell, at least not now, otherwise the back channel conversation with his agent would have resulted in an interview.

Pretty much everyone turned us down as expected so we should be thankful to have JH.

JH definitely has his work cut out for him, stepping into the situation with the NCAA and players leaving.......what a job he has in front of him

what to think to be honest about it . The last
3 coaches have been a disaster plus with
sanctions we aren't in the best position. JMO.
