IF Wilcox Leaves, Candidates For DC Job (merged)

I like Steele, correct me if I'm wrong but didn't he play at UT?
Posted via VolNation Mobile

was at Furman his freshmen year and transferred to UT for 2 seasons. didn't play much. was there 78 and 79. He and Chavis were best friends and came from Dillon SC.

Yes he would. Tennessee fans don't like to hear it but across the college football world, a coaches future looks better being a DC at Texas than a DC at Tennessee. Its a no brainer if he gets an offer as far as his potential for the future. Very few coaches would not make same move with the opportunity

+1

Texas is a different animal.

I know it's not UT, but Chizik and Muschamp both made the lateral move when they were making tons of money at Auburn (insert money joke) because they knew it would set them up for HC jobs.

Besides Steele, does anyone remember who the top candidates were last season when Dooley hired Wilcox?

@WNOXDaveHooker
.Dooley said no anncment pending with Wilcox and there are thousands that would want his job. More on The Drive at 3 on 100.3 WNOX.Wnoxfm.com

Why not try and get Dick Bumpas? Former UT coach, and he has done a good job at TCU. Didn't we try to hire him as a DC before and turned us down or was that for the head coach job?

Oh, yea then we definitely need to make him the DC then.

If Lance was a good DC or thought to be one at some time he would still be one somewhere.

I was just stating that he had experience at the position. I don't even know if he is interested in the job.

These are just guys I'd like to see Dooley go after.

1. Randy Shannon
2. Kevin Steele
3. Dick Bumpas
4. Manny Diaz
5. Lance Thompson

Nice list...As a DC I would love to have Randy Shannon as long as he doesn't EVER become the head coach at UT lol...He's a fantastic defensive mind however just not a good head coach...The players would love him that's for sure and he's a hell of a recruiter....But its all hearsay until Wilcox takes the Texas job if he even does.

Forgive me if I'm not up to date on UF's staff, but IF Muschump offers LT the DC spot, maybe we should counter with the same. Would Sirmon be his replacement? If not, who?

Sirmon has no coaching experience other than as a graduate assistant. We have Chuck Smith with no previous experience as a full time coach. We don't need a second one, certainly as a coordinator. JMO

Sorry if I'm not reading this correctly but I'm referring to Sirmon as LB coach with LT at DC. I believe Thompson has coordinator experience. BTW this is not what I want, I'm just throwing it out there.

We always like to throw out the big names...but in reality, we are much more likely to hire a guy that is another "up-and-coming" coach.

There is a good chance that this is all a moot point.

I think Wilcox will stay and we will see what he can do once he gets the players to know his scheme inside and out.

Agreed...if Wilcox were to leave, hiring an experienced DC would be imperative. Last thing we would need is a guy learning on the fly.
