How does that affect your W/L prediction for the rest of the season?

I'm forecasting 5-7, but if Tennessee wins the opener, that flips to 7-5 for me.

That would also speak VOLumes to how fast the new staff may be able to right the ship.

I can still see us going 6-6 even with losing the game. But we have to beat FL or USCe to balance out.

Beating USCe is an absolute must for me this year. Muschamp completely owns Tennessee. He is not a good enough coach to be 6-0 against us. That speaks volumes about the level suckage we have reached.

As for WVU, not worried about them at all. Every year we hear about the out of conference foe we face first and have come out with a W. I also think WVU is really over-hyped. Dangerous but over-hyped. I don't have a predicted win total but I know that less than 8 wins and the season will have sucked.

IĀ’ll go from 3-9 to 6-6.

I think showing out that well on the opener means we got the talent needed to compete with the middle of the pack SEC teams.

Beat UF after that and IĀ’ll be getting thoroughly impressed with Pruitt and his ability as a HC.

Win or lose, we're going to lose UF, UGA, UA, AU, and possibly VU, USC, MIZZ.

This year will not be fun.

7 losses? eh.

it's not like 6-6 is awesome. but i think they can squeeze that out of this schedule.

4 guaranteed
3 possible
1 or 2 maybe.

I can see 6-9 losses this season.

Still, it will be interesting to see our new offense and defense. See the development (please please please let there be some development) of our returners. And see our new recruits.

Lets break it down again.

Almost certain wins: ETSU, UTEP, Charlotte
Highly possible wins: Vandy, UK, Missouri (I feel good about these games since they are at the end of the season and the team will have had time to become a team.
Toss ups: Florida (who knows under Mullen) and the Cocks (some say they are a dark horse this year) and West Virginia with Grier.
Probably losses: Alabama, Auburn, Georgia

It is easy to see a 6-6 season there and I do think a win over West Virginia would make me bullish that we make it 7-5. I think that is our ceiling though for next season but would be a great start to the Pruitt era.

yeah, there's a lot that needs to happen, for sure. lot's of newness all over the place.

new schemes and 1st time head coach, bag things will happen.

but i think you get the 3 w's already mentioned, and then you just need 3 more out of the other 9 games.

that's doable. if we win either the WVU or FL games, things start looking up. the schedule is so front loaded, as usual. so it may look ugly early...in fact, it probably will.

stay healthy, play defense and see what happens.

Florida, South Carolina, and Kentucky barely beat us last year. Missouri and Vanderbilt at best have equal talent as us. The chasm that is often portrayed to exist between us and the rest of the East is, in my opinion, fiction.

Now we still have a long ways to go to win crowns, but to get back to Butch like records probably isn't too far off.

We thought we 'd beat mizzou,ky, scar, and candy. Got boat raced by mizzou and candy(dayum!) the other two scraped by. Bad coaching, injuries to key defenders, and flat out lying down were key factors in those losses. 6-6 is never acceptable at UT, given the circumstances it would at least show improvement.

Jones IS gone. There's a new sheriff in town. No more charts -- just coaching and play calling. 7-5 minimum.

IMO I would e fine with 6-6 or even 5-7 if our team plays with toughness and heart. We are really not built to win the tough games YET. ButI would love to see our guys show some fight. Get in games and work their A$$es off. Dont let anyone step on you. IF that happens and we loss tight games I could deal with that because that means we are learning to win. It will be a process. My comments will probably be torched but we have to take steps. Go Big Orange!!!!!

Newness plays into it. Other things for me which make me a bit pessimistic:
CJP is unproven as head coach at this level.
Staff chemistry challenges (if any)
Change of O&D philosophy/demands with players recruited for different philosophy.
Weeding out the quitters and those that didnt buy in
Is injury bug over for us
QB question marks all over the place
Replacing the players who left for nfl
CJP's own comments about our players

So right now, the unknowns about our team are so vast, anything between a 3-win season and 9 wins is in the realm of possibility.

If we beat West Virginia, that ostensibly puts us up in the 7-to-9 win range.

-------------Bama
-------------Georgia
-------------Auburn

---------Florida
---------West Virginia
---------South Carolina
-----Mizzou
-----Kentucky
-----Vandy
-UTEP
-Charlotte
-ETSU

I think of Florida, West Virginia, and South Carolina all as "peer competition" (and, until proven otherwise, so are Mizzou, Kentucky, and Vandy...though none of those 3 should be once we're back where we belong).

So yeah, beating West Virginia would certainly narrow the range of what's likely. In a good way.

Neat question, OP. :good!:

all valid. i just think the buy in for the most part has been pretty good. i'll be interesting to see what attrition, if any, occurs from here until WVU.

i think also, one thing that will happen is this staff will make mistakes, all 1st timers do. and we'll just have to deal with it.

also agree on the injury bug. i just hope we've paid enough dues in that department that it leaves us alone this year.

developmentally, i think this team will do what most 1st timers do....start slow, and progressively get better. combine that with a softer back half, and who knows.

i still think you win the 3 cupcakes, and you find a way to win 3 of the other 9 (really, 3 of the other 6, considering Au, Bama and GA are likely l's).
