If we take too many commits

Maybe Volnation could help out...we could all donate to a fund each year that Freak could use to pay the way for a few recruits. I'm sure it's being done somewhere.:):)

I realize you're probably joking, but the family would have to pay it themselves. Otherwise every school would have boosters paying kids tuitions so they could sign as many recruits as they wanted.

This keeps getting brought up but no such penalty exists, at least not in the official manuals. Still, flagrantly disregarding the established counter limits would not be a savvy move when trying to rebuild a football program, IMO. And for a program that's still on probation like UT, it would be incredibly foolish.

I've always heard its 3. If it isn't then whats the penalty? There has to be some kind of penalty that's keeping people following the 25 limit rule.

According to 247 Arky had 41 in 2011 and 37 in 2010. Auburn took 42 in 2010. How did they make those numbers work?

I thought if you took an OV you count towards the scholarship numbers no matter what, so at this point no one but the Berry twins could pay for themselves anyway.

Edit: In no way am I insinuating that they should do that.

This is how I understand it too.

I know that Butch has a plan and it's going to work. The amount of concern you generate over this is directly in proportion to the impatience you have and how close you might think the football staff are village idiots. Personally I think it's going to be a slam dunk and great class.

I would think some of these recruits are already set up to gray shirt or get money through different avenues such as pell grant, academic scholly or paid by their big brother Eric Berry, just guessing but it will work out....

Not sure where you got those numbers from. Auburn didn't sign 42 2010 nor did Arkansas sign 41 in 2011. Ole Miss did sign a big class a few years back though, I think 36.

Not sure...on a related note...if you couldn't take the pain anymore and wanted it to end, which is quicker...in front of a train?...or a bus?...siap :)

I think bus may be quicker, but train is more sure.

Train may cause more work for funeral director. :)

Where are you guys reading the penalty info at?
I don't think it was ever released to the public

i know that for every recruit over your yearly number that you take you lose 3 for the next class. so if we take 32 for the 2014 class we will lose 6 scholarships for 2015. in 2015, we are only going to sign 20(?) recruits because we have to stay under the 85 limit. the question i have is if we were to take 32 commits for 2014 and we lose 6 for 2015, would this take us from 25 to 19 because the ncaa "gives" 25 scholarships a year to give out? or would it go from 20 to 14 because that is the most we can give and stay under the 85 man limit? i think it is relevant because if we go from 25 to 19, it would almost be stupid not to take 32 commits. Thanks in advance.

It would absolutely beyond stupid to purposely oversign. Are you serious right now? Self imposing a 6 scholarship penalty to sign two extra guys? Are you kidding me?

Ole Miss was a large reason for some changes in the rules. I do remember that.

i meant if we had 5 scholarships that we could not use anyway because of the 85 limit. that is why i asked. i don't see why that is stupid.

But if you knew you were pretty unlikely to use all 6 next year and the two guys this year were really good talents you have to at least think about it.

1. They are going to use every single scholarship next recruiting cycle.

2. You don't think about it. It's dumb.

Question...

Can UT give out academic scholarships to some football players that have a high GPA (I think there are several in this class) and they can then walk on and then not count against the 25 or 85 rule?

I think the numbers will work themselves out as well but just wondering if Butch now has many "silent" commitments and he's trying to figure out how to get them all in to the system.

Most likely Jimmy Hyams and John Adams are going to pay the way for 5 or 6 football players because they are such big supporters of our team.
Yeah, really :) :)

If EB actually stepped up and paid for his brothers in order to free up 2 more spots, we may have to name the damn stadium after him!!

I think it's lose 2 for every 1 over you sign. I may be wrong.

You are right, but when all said and done we will be at 30 or 31 a couple may be to look elsewhere and a few will flip like they always does, so lets just keep what we got and hold the class together and sing ROCKY TOP all day long on NSD.

I'm also assuming that this penalty would come off of the 85 right?

There will be attrition with current players as well. I'm betting we sign 25 next year also.

Geez I cannot make heads or tails out of any of this. Can someone break it down for someone who is stupid in this area?
