Where do we end up in the polls for week 4? We are currently at #15 in the AP poll. Looking at the week 3 schedule there are at least 2 teams ahead of us that will lose. I bet we are right around #10 again going into the Florida game, with them at #15-#18.

I know early season polls don't matter, and "just win, baby" and whatnot, but it's a fun talking point.

Games that allow for potential upward mobility of #15 UT:

#6 Houston @ Cincinnati (doubtful)
#2 FSU @ #10 Louisville
#12 Michigan St @ #18 ND
NDSU @ # 13 Iowa (also doubtful)
#3 OSU @ #14 OU
USC @ #7 Stanford
#11 Texas at Cal
#16 UGA @ Mizzou ( UGA is ranked ahead of us in the coaches poll)

FYI, #23 UF is hosting North Texas.

Thoughts?

I would rather look at it from this view.

The last time we started 3 and 0 was in 2004. The last time we beat the lizards was in 2004. 2016 is the year we break the streak and the drought of not going 3 and 0.

It depends on how we play. O-line looks amazing and we curb stomp them on offense and defense then I can see the voters thinking "they've put it back together" and move us up to 10-13 range. Win close or our O-line looks bad then we stay 15 or drop a spot.

I'm not worried about the rankings. As long as we take care of business the polls will sort themselves out. But to play the game I think if Texas loses and Notre dame beats MSU and FSU beat Louisville then I think we will be at 11-13 in the rankings after this weekend. Maybe...maybe top 10. However, this is based off that we thump Ohio is fashion.

I will give the polls the same regard given to them by the selection committee, which is zero.

Also the last year we beat Florida, Georgia and Alabama in the same season:)

If we don't cover, we could drop. And we may not cover because we'll probably try different rotations at OLine, test several solutions to replace DK and give PT to backups to rest our starters. As long as we get the W, the score doesn't matter so much. The last thing we want is to aggravate injuries or get players hurt before SEC play.

Two teams above us will lose, without question:

--> #2 FSU @ #10 Louisville
--> #3 OSU @ #14 OU

Three of the four (FSU, Louisville, and Oklahoma) would drop below us after a loss; Ohio State would probably only drop to about the #10 position.

So that's one, maybe two, steps up for the Vols.

After that, it's all maybes. As many as three other teams could fall from above:

--> #7 Stanford, against USC
--> #11 Texas, facing off against Cal
--> #12 Michigan St, playing #18 ND

My guess says one of those loses, the other two win. BUT one of the winners might play ugly enough to give up a spot to us anyway.

Therefore, as long as we win impressively as we should over Ohio, I can see us rising two to four spots.

Say three as a good intermediate guess.

Look for the Vols to be #12 in the AP poll next Sunday afternoon.

Go Vols!

Barring upsets -
Let's just say the Oklahoma spot becomes available. If we play well, we take it. But if we played poorly while Georgia looks good over Mizzou, chances are they leapfrog us.

Depends on how we play. We have been winning our way out of the Coaches poll so to speak. Down to #15 after beating VT by 21. If we finally come out hot and roll over Ohio like we should, I see us raising 2-4 spots in the Coaches and AP Poll. If we come out flat a 3rd week in a row and don't dominate both sides of the ball, I think the AP keeps us where we are and the Coaches poll knocks us down to about #16 or #17.

We have this perception right now that we are winning in spite of our talent and not because of it. We aren't dominating the games like we should be. Think about the Ohio game as you like, but they are a team that is far less talented and experienced than us. We SHOULD beat them by 4 touchdowns or more. But we might not.

If we take care of business, then we will rise up a couple of spots. We aren't going to jump into the Top 10 until we beat Florida.

Appy beating Miami would help our ranking more than anything we do to Ohio.

What I would love to see is both Tennessee and App State win Saturday. If App State can win that will prove a lot. If they get killed, not so much.

honestly, and not to be crass, but i just don't care where we are in the polls after the OHIO game. all i care about is the record after the Bama game. the polls will take care of themselves based on those results.

Dude no one will be watching our game. They'll look at the score and if we win convincingly and others ahread of us lose, we'll move up. I promise you the AP voters will not be watching us play Ohio at noon to see our o-line when Lamar Jackson and Louisville are playing FSU on ABC.

I think we'll move up to #12 after this week.

At least 2 teams ahead of us will lose. Most likely it'll be #11 Texas @ Cal (I don't think this team is that good) and #12 Michigan State @ #18 Notre Dame. I also see #13 Iowa struggling with North Dakota State in a close game. That along with App State beating Miami will have us jump them in the rankings even though Iowa will win.

I think #14 Oklahoma beats #3 Ohio State in a thrilling game. I also think #10 Louisville could pull the upset against #2 FSU. That will keep all those 4 teams ranked ahead of us.
