If we make the final four does Barnes retire?

If we get to F4 I think he still coaches 3-4 more years. If we win the whole thing? Yeah he’s out

Listening to what he says in press conferences, Barnes does what he does because he enjoys it each day and because he sees positively influencing young men as God's purpose for his life. I don't think career accomplishments have any bearing on how he uses his time. He's got bigger fish to fry.

Latest Barnes quote about coaching, from a story that came out this evening. He's talking about himself, Pitino, Izzo, Cal etc.

“If you love being in the gym and coaching basketball, why not do it for as long as you can?” Barnes said. “The game has certainly changed, but [our generation] got into it because we love coaching basketball. I know talking to those guys, even today, they still really love the challenge of putting together a group of guys that can play beautiful basketball. It’s easier today than it was back then. You can recruit a guy now for a week and get him: What’s the number? In some ways, it gets easier, but the stakes are higher.

“I know this: You don’t take any of it for granted.”

The chase for the Final Four and championship is like lots of things in life. A lot of the enjoyment comes with the pursuit. The championship is kind of anticlimactic. Has been very enjoyable watching his teams and other Tennessee teams chase the championships. Football team in 98. I wasn't around for 51. Once you win, then what ? I know, you want more, but there is no higher achievement. In life, there are always other things to pursue. Other goals to reach. Sports sort of plateaus. Volume is a thing, but seems to me each new one makes the previous ones less valuable. Look at Kentucky. There is a reason some of their fans seem so antagonistic. They can win more, but they can never win the first one again. Maybe first for them, but not the program. This comment went way long. Happy for the kids. Happy for the fans. Enjoy the pursuit.

I am still having trouble with the thread topic itself. Getting to a FF isn't that huge. Lots of coaches who aren't in Barnes' League have made the FF
March Madness is the biggest crap shoot tournament in sports. Yes, some coaches have made the Final Four in a one off, but the consistency of coaches to be there year in and year out defines their greatness.

This program has NEVER been to a FF. Of course it’s a huge deal. Yes, we all want a natty, but in order to win a 💍 you gotta make the FF.

It’s hard to win. It’s harder to win consistently. Kentucky is a 🏀 school and they haven’t been to a FF in 11 years. We’ve been knocking on the 🚪 and hopefully tomorrow, we break it down.

And if we win, we’d have to play Arizona, who was #1 most of the year. If it’s championship or bust, you’ll never be satisfied.

💯 when we won the natty in ⚾️ I was more relieved than happy. We spend so much time agonizing about not winning vs. being competitive year in and year out.

It's isn't championship or bust. For me anyway. I happen to value the regular season. Barnes greatness has already been defined.

Same. The last 6-7 seasons it has been a joy to watch UT basketball, especially if you don't base that enjoyment on some specific result like getting to a Sweet 16 or Final Four. Nobody wants a FF or national title more than me, but my feeling about this team or Barnes won't change based on the result of the game today, or any game.

Watching this team grow from November to where they are now has been a blast, just like it has been every year that Barnes has been here, the way he has built this program from dust into one we can be proud of. Not enjoying the whole process and basing everything on a specific result or bragging rights with your buddies is a mindset I'll never understand.

Funny, but being a lifetime fan of Philly sports teams, I've known a ton of fans who are envious of fans in NY or LA and the success their teams have, but I wouldn't trade the experiences I had with the Sixers, Eagles, or Phils for any amount of championships. I feel exactly the same way about UT.

Rant over, now let's go get'em!!!!

Knicks and Nets fans have not so much to envy. 😄

The only way he even thinks about hanging it up this year is if this team wins the whole thing. I don’t think a “we lost later” banner is going to be enough to satisfy him

No. Rick is enjoying coaching and relates well to kids. He is unaffected by the aging process. He can go at least ten more years.

Rick saying the recruiting period being much easier likely makes him feel younger by not having to spend more time on the trail getting guys when he can say “what’s your number?” lol
