If we make the final four does Barnes retire?

I always wanted him to go out on top and on his own terms. However, this may be a bad year for that to happen. UNC open, maybe Kansas. The dominos that wil fall we could end up with a coach outside of our top 5 choices

I think he is thinking bigger than Final Four. He has had a fire under him the last several seasons... I see it in his energy and recruiting.

Well, if we make it to the Final Four, I hope he doesn't retire till after we play in the semi's and or the final, right?

IMO, Coach Rick Barnes ain’t done yet. Win or lose, the reload after this season will be awesome!

I don’t think Barnes is a coach focused on personal accomplishments. I believe he sees his job as his mission to mentor young men and will probably continue until his health won’t allow him to bring the energy needed to perform the job to his standards. JMO

He may go till 80, who knows. He ll go till he no longer loves it or just doesn't wanna travel all over the place anymore.

Very likely honestly. Coach K made a final four at 75, and boeheim made a final four at 76
my dad while not a coach is still working and productive at 76 he also keeps himself in great shape i can def see Barnes coaching another 3 years

You are right, CRB is not focused on his personal success. Of course he is competitive and wants to win but that is not his main reason. He will coach until he feels God tells him it is time to close this chapter.

Based on his faith he more than likely doesn’t view this as a retirement decision but a what is God calling me to do next decision. The timeline could be shorter or much longer than any of us think but CRB is not going to retire and sit at home. He will go serve where he feels directed next.

When viewed through this context it becomes almost impossible for any of us to know a timeline because it is not driven by a Final Four, his win total, etc.

I think he would stay on a few more years. Being selfish, I would love for us to make the Final Four and hang a banner in Thompson Boling Arena. I'm afraid to say win it all. This has been a fun ride so far.

Its seemed like a couple of folks who might know a little more have said “Vol fans should enjoy this ride.” Think Chris Low was one, don’t recall the others. It could just mean four straight 16s (at the time said), but it did make me wonder.

He looks healthy and I'm pretty sure that he is doing what he loves. He doesn't need the money. His job performance is still more than satisfactory. Why retire if coaching is what makes him happy?

39th season. May as well make it an even 40

Id guess this or next year is his last. Just hope we have a good plan for after as well.

I used to think he would. But now I legit think it’s not just “wants to make a final 4 here” I think he wants a damn national title before he hangs it up.
Nobody deserves one more than him. Hope we can it get it this year.

Selfishly, I hope he coaches us until the day the good Lord call him home; but I also know that he has kids and grandkids that he probably wants to spend some time with, and I can't fault him if he decides to hang it up in another year or two in order to be with them.

I just want to make a Final Four first and then I’ll worry about this lol. Hoping that after tomorrow this conversation will be one to have.

No. Rick is enjoying coaching and relates well to kids. He is unaffected by the aging process. He can go at least ten more years.
