How long will it take to be NC competitors and remain in the top 10 for several years?

It depends on how much further the program slips. Mediocre or worse with nationally recruited players, what happens when the big talent quits coming in.

most likely....5-6 years, assuming we dont fall completely apart the year we get him

We could easily compete for a SEC Championship with a great scheme, better fundamentals and vastly improved Special Teams play. The right coach could have this team in the mix w/i 1-2 years.

but, i hate to say this, the problem is finding the right coach. More times than less, you dont find that guy who fixes everything/ is your savior in the first hire and you have to go through several more. Everyone's got different opinions and views and just as well each coach doesnt necessarily translate into working perfectly in a new program.

just even in the OC department, alot of people thought that clawson would be the right kinda guy to keep the offense running...:hmm:

Then I think we should keep Fulmer, he can do the same in that period of time.

Then I would be all for the change!

If you make a great hire, then it could only take two years. For example:

  • LSU

Last two years with DiNardo:

1998: 4-7
1999: 3-8

First four years with Saban.

2000: 8-4
2001: 10-3 (SEC Championship)
2002: 8-5
2003: 13-1 (SEC Championship, National Championship)

  • Georgia

Jim Donnan in his last two seasons.

1999: 8-4
2000: 8-4

First four years with Mark Richt:

2001: 8-4
2002: 13-1 (SEC Championship)
2003: 11-3
2004: 10-2

  • Florida

Ron Zook in his last two seasons.

2003: 8-5
2004: 7-5

First four years with Urban Meyer:

2005: 9-3
2006: 13-1 (SEC Championship, National Championship)
2007: 9-4
2008: 3-0 (TBD, #4 in the country right now)

  • Southern Cal

Paul Hackett in his last two seasons.

1999: 6-6
2000: 5-7

First four years with Pete Carroll:

2001: 6-6
2002: 11-2 (PAC 10 Championship)
2003: 12-1 (PAC 10 Championship, National Championship)
2004: 13-0 (PAC 10 Championship, National Championship)

If you don't make the right hire, then it may take awhile. Another example is Michigan with Rich Rodriguez, & them struggling this season. When Rodriguez gets a quarterback for his system, eventually he'll have Michigan back at the top.

Honestly? With a team like UT we just need to show we can win and that we're legit nationally. If that happens, the recruits come in. In a lot of cases a high quality guy can make a very immediate and very noticeable impact.

Saban has 2 years with Bama and they are a top ten program.....CUM wins an SEC and NC in his 2nd year

Look what Pearl did. The right coach will make a difference DAY 1. We have talent. We just need the coaching.

Yeah, just ask Nebraska about making the wrong hire, it's been 10 years and they still aren't even a shadow of their past selves. Or ask Miami. Sure Coker won a NC with Butch Davis' players, but then he drove that program into the dirt.

Who knows but i'am willing to try. Whats the alternative? Continue to get clowned in our stadium, their stadium on national tv.

I think the impact would be immediate with the right coach. We cannot be afraid to make a change for fear of getting the wrong person. While Fulmer is a nice guy, he is probably one of the worst and most unrespected coaches in the country. Keeping him would be a huge mistake...it already has been.

Would you want your son to play for Fulmer??We need to get him out now , and let the one of the Assistance Coaches take the team to a Bowl game > The team seems to not want to play for Fulmer

Yeah i agree that should be what happens. The AD won't do that he's a idiot. I don't care that he hired bruce pearl he's a idiot.

Actually a good thread...I like the summary for how it took ~1 year for those new coaches to turn their programs into contenders.....not a high price to pay to make a staff change. Make the right hire the first time!

I fear if the Vols wait too long to make staff changes that the high quality recruits will back away from TN (more so than now).....me thinks a change is needed after this year!

Sadly....our QB situation is the key reason the Vols have no chance for a decent year. Crompton cannot win in the SEC. Either he does not get it, or Clawson and his staff are poor teachers.

I wouldn't want to be the one responsible for finding the next UT coach! Talk about pressure. It's just a gamble at best.

A gamble i'am and hopefully most are ready to take. I mean does a chicken bowl trophy or a outhouse trophy really mean that much to you?
