If we do not finish in the top 20 in recruiting do not blame the current coaching staff. I blame 2 people.

1. Mike Hamilton for 2 bad hires. Lane Kiffin was his 1st hire. While Lane looked like he would turn us around. Lane became fools gold when he bolted for USC after one year. This did more damage to our progam than any good he did for the program. The other bad hire was Dooley

2. Dooley- every minute he was our head coach, he devalued this program. He was a good in the home recruiter. He could pour on the charm when he wanted to recruits or to the media. But we lost ground in recruiting because his coaches were not making contact with high school coaches and his staff misevaluated in recruiting. Plus he could not coach a lick!!!!

I hope and believe that we will win at least 7 ball games next year and have a good recruiting class next year.

Seven years of neglect due to mismanagement about sums up. Now the Govenor is setting the stage for bankruptcy and a plan for salvation. I'd really like to know his plan. Something other than winning I'm sure. All he is doing is trying to heard the sheep back to Neyland.

I believe whoever is our HC has both the authority and responsibility for success. It's the same in sports and business. When you agree to be the top dog you get all the perks and pay and attention. You also understand you have the responsibility regardless of circumstances. Real winners understand and accept it. Sounds cold but the rest of the world does not care about excuses.

Good thread. I don't believe we have ever looked at our situation from this angle. Way to take on new perspectives, OP.

One of the biggest reasons we arent in the top 20 is because Dooley didnt recruit in his last few months leaving us behind on everybody. Then when butch came in, he had to make up ground with kids that were already committed somewhere else

Texas, USC, Oklahoma, Bama, LSU, an ND have all experienced down cycles at some point over the last 20 years. We are in the midst of ours, but we will eventually come out of this. It just takes a little patience, which is a rare commodity these days in college football.

Was this due to Dooley's recruiting or the ones that enrolled early from Kiffins era?
Either way it didn't equal wins on the field.. We ended up with a Cali cool QB that had shat for leadership skills, and we went through a forgettable 3 year run.. On paper it was Dooley's class as of now.. Butch may end up with a lower rated class , let's hope the results aren't similar. No more Cali cool QBs in this one.. That should help...

I agree with you. I think about what if Hanilton had hired a Butch Jones after Fulmer. We would be giving Alabama trouble right now. :banghead2:

This is pretty much it if you add in the fact that they were recruiting for different systems on both sides of the ball. Dooley couldn't coach. Moving to the 3-4 with Sal turned out to be one of the most disastrous decisions in recent UT history.

But he recruited well enough to leave a roster that is miles ahead of what he inherited.

It is easy and gratifying to blame everything on the guy who was fired... but to say you "know" that Jones and his staff bear no responsibility for any failure at this point is not being "realistic" or objective.

I am most definitely willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. He has gotten UT into the conversation with several big time players. That's fine. But UT has been in the conversation for big time players many times over the past several years.... the Vols just seem to finish second with those guys alot.

Until Jones makes a habit of actually winning those big time recruiting battles... he cannot be absolved of responsibility. Whether you blame him, Dooley, Kiffin, Hamilton, or George W Bush for the problems.... he will still get 3 years to prove he can get it done.
